Is in only in New Hampshire? people have big stars on the side of their house or barn...

does that stand for something? I dont want to put one on my house just because other people are.

The stars are on a lot of homes in Illinois, too. It's just. pretty decoration and doesn't have any special meaning.

No it's everywhere at least as far south as Virginia, I think it's just decoration

Those are called "hex signs." They originated in the Pennsylvania Dutch area, and spread from there.
Some were meant to protect against bad luck, but most are just for decoration.
