How old does my cat have to be before I get it neutered?

When I adopted my cat, it was a minimum weight rather than age. The shelter fixed the cats when they weighed at least 2 pounds.

Animal shelters neuter cats as early as 8 weeks as long as they are at least 2 lbs in weight. A good safe age is 3-4 months.

We foster kittens for our local Humane Society, and their guidelines are 2 pounds or 8 weeks old.
