Temperature has a lot to do with insects. Cold winters kill off adult insects except for those that find insulated shelters, Eggs typically are the source of insects in the spring. With favorable conditions more insect eggs hatch, more larva have food to eat, and more adults are formed. Dragonflies are carnivorous and feed on other insects, so with more insects and larva to feed on, there are more dragonflies. Lightning bugs are actually beetles and love warm temperatures...they are more active when it's warm. There might only be as many this year as last, but with warmer temperatures they are more active and therefore you "see" more of them.

your area is so natural place to live with. it's good to having those things in one's life. Especially in New England, they are pretty natureal place in one of many countries where there are lot's of animals. because, the other part of places are already polluted by hunters so they need to stay in clean area like your places

This wills depend with the weather. Maybe the weather has not been the same like in the past. They are brought about by different climates. Some climates favor them and some don't. Maybe this year the weather has contributed to their increase.
