There are writers that roll around in money but there are more that can't pay their rent. Usually for an unknown author, & it is their first attempt, it's a struggle. You'll probably spend more than you make in the beginning, but if you book is an instant hit you're rich. It doesn't really seem to difficult, for fun sit down & just start writing, see how far you get, it is much tougher than you think. But if that's what you're interested in go for it, the worst that can happen is that you'll learn a few things. Good luck, send me a copy of your book

It depends on the author and the book. Some make 5 million on one book and then a couple of thousands on the other. The really famous ones like J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer have made over 200 million.

Both of these guys are right so don't make being an author your career. It's recommend that you pick a career that is stable to study for in college (as well as creative writing and other English classes that will help you with writing your novel) and write in your free time so you can support yourself and your family. Hoping for your novel to make a big hit is like hoping to become a famous pop star by winning American Idol. It's just not practical, and most authors hold down multiple jobs. Good luck!
