Farmers make those huge rolls of hay for later use. Hay is fed when there is no enough pasture or range land on which to graze an animal. Hay is considered to be very sensitive to weather conditions.

The outer layers rots slowly but the rouded shape sheds water preserving the interior for months so it can later be fed to cattle in lean times.
