What's the best type of alcohol for diabetics to drink, in terms of minimal BSL Fluctuation?

I know doctors advise no alcohol at all, but u know I've had type one diabetes since I was 12 and although completely ignoring them in my teenage years, the rum and shots have caused me one too many hypo's/hyper's and would love some advice from other diabetics as to drinks they enjoy and how those drinks react with there sugars.

You can take cocktails that are sugar free. Always drink with a non-caloric drink on the side like soda water. Always wear your diabetic bracelet when you are drinking alcohol. Alcohol will dehydrate you, so make sure you are taking fluids all the time. For more information, go to http://www.diabetes.org/.

Thanks mate, I've just recently started mixing my own with sugar free drinks mostly because I can't stand the taste of those sugary drinks anymore, but your info was defiantly helpful and the link also! I've seen the Australian diabetes site but this looks like is got more. Will definitely check it out

Hum, 'NOT allowed' those very strong words! Good for you in not drinking, I'm sure that's a great life style choice for you. But I'm a fully grown adult and I'm 'allowed' to do what I want with my body. I enjoy having a few drinks with my friends once in a while and I'm just trying to gather more info to help me to it safely. Alcohol I'd not good for anyone and diabetes increases the risk and danger of everything, so sue me if I'm determined to live my normal and happy life!... Again I resect you for your decisions but that comment just sounded a little too judgemental!

I live with a type 1 diabetic, and he drinks Bundy Bare, it has no sugar in it all. He has been a diabetic since he was 6 years old, and enjoys to have a drink every now and then. There isnt any thing written any where stating diabetics are not allowed to drink, as long as it has no sugar, and your just wanting to have a couple of drinks, then why not. Just read the labels :)

Oh yes, we diabetics are used to reading our labels! I'm glad you posted this, cuz I wanted to know as well. I don't really care for beer but I'll have it if it's all that there is. in my pre-diabetic days, I liked an occasional mixed drink, but we know that they're too sweet...
