How can I convince my principal that I'm a Sikh?

I'm a 14 year old male and the school I go to has a 'no long hair' rule for guys. Long hair runs in my family and I want to keep it going but after summer ends they'll make me get it cut. I need a way to convince everyone that I'm a Sikh. (Actually I want to convince them my religion is split between Sikhism and Christianity.) I know a little bit but not too much about Sikhism (like the three vows they take, the name of God (Waheguru) and some other important things.) Any simple steps I could take to make them believe me? Any advise is greatly appreciated! Specific information is preferred.

Sikh religion prohibits cutting hair-there must be indians in your school who can also vouch for you- in US even sikh police are allowed to wear turban- show your pass port or certificate and other relevant documents from local gurudhwara to convince school authorities-

I am a natural born US citizen, therefore do not have a passport. I do not own any specific type of certificate because I have only adopted Sikhism recently and have not been baptized, nor will be because my branch is Kesh Dhari Sikh. Although, most of my family members are Christian, I also have a few who are Sikhs and have adopted the religion within the US.

Also, I do not attend any studies. I do all my research online and meditation, practices, ect. at home.

yours appear to be slightly complicated- i am from India where more than 25% of the sikhs are without turbans-if you idea is not workable in your school not wearing tuban is not the end of it - pracitce your religion properly visit the nearest gurudhwara as often as possible and be a good sikh in your heart and mind.goodlusk to you.

They already know about and support it, so I'm good to go with my parents.

So you want help getting around the rule of cutting your hair. So you looked around and found a religion that required you to have long hair. I think that's a disgrace to use a religion just so you don't have to cut you hair. In a few more years you'll be entering the real world where you have to man up and follow rules even when you don't want too. Best you start now.

That's not what it's like, my religion really is split but they don't believe me! My branch of the religion states my hair will not be cut for 10 years after I turn 14. I have been Christian since birth but have adopted Sikhism as a second religion, that's why I don't know much about it yet. I'm following it's rules as best as possible, but school is getting in the way.

Also, cutting my hair isn't a 'real world' law, so there isn't any problem. I'm a straight A student in all the Honors classes, never get in any trouble or anything. If I could choose, I'd say I'm pretty ready for the real world.

Sorry about the details, it did kinda sound like I didn't mean it was my religion. That's completely my fault.
Report as
It's kinds sounds like your trying to justify what your doing. How can you adopt a religion you know so little about? After reading your statements again it seems to me that your looking for a way not to get you hair cut. What's the big deal? It's hair. It's grows back. Thanks for trying to convince me but...... Still not buying it. If you can convince your parents you may have a chance. Good luck.
Report as
I don't know much about it yet, but I will. I don't know technically if it's classified to be adopted yet because of my lack of experience. But thanks anyways!

The school will not believe you. They will believe your parents, who must write them a letter asking for a religious exemption to the dress code.

I knew they wouldn't believe me, but they would my parents. I just wanted to know what they had to do. Well that seems simple enough. Thank you!

They really shouldn't have to give them too many details. Basically state that you are of the Sikh faith. One of the tenets of that faith is the long hair thing. The principal can do any further research that is necessary himself. Schools routinely grant religious exemptions for vaccinations, and that's a state law, so a dress code one shouldn't be that tough. May want to have a little speech prepared in case he calls you into the office to ask why long hair is important to the religion and why following it is important to you, but I can't see a school district wanting to appear to be biased toward a religion. You can always appeal to the superintendent and the school board as well.

Thank you very much, all of your information is very helpful to me, and I deeply appreciate it!

No problem. I just can't believe people still care if guys have long hair.

I know, it's ridiculous.

Why does your school have a no long hair policy? That's just stupid.

It is, isn't it!? They say it's supposed to reflect the community. Most adults in my family (guys and girls) have long hair, and so do a lot of the random people that I see around our district. (I'd say maybe 30-40% of men in our district have long hair.)

I will not. Not again. This is only one of this school district's terrible rules I've been dealing with. Way to punish the only student in the school who actually works hard and gets what e deserves. Every other school district around has rules that I would be fine with, but I can't afford a transfer. This long hair policy was made in probably 1920, to reflect the community. It's still around for the same purpose and isn't reflecting anything but 90 years i the past. And isn't harassing me about my looks (like my hair) considered bullying? They don't like how I look, it's their problem I'm not trying to be mean, I am just sick and tired of this. And it's only the vice principal and superintendent that even care about this rule. Big surprise... neither have hair.

Any half smart princial will know you cant be both Sikh and Christian. And SHAME on you for premeditated lies and fraud. Your principal probably already gets that about you, that you are a liar and cheater. Shame on you, too, for disrespecting both Sikhs and Christians here and any in your school by trying to use their beliefs to perpetrate a fraud.

you can have 2 religions. being raised in one then adopting another. but not full demolishing the first one.
Report as
You all can say what you want, I'll stick to what I believe in no matter what you say, because honestly it does not affect me. I am no liar, if you've read the other answers and comments, you'd know that, I know it may seem that way but it's not. Also, if you knew the vice principal, you'd get EXACTLY why I'm doing this. And I truely am both Sikh and Christian, just haven't been Sikh for long. And thank you Hannie, at least there are some people who understand.
Report as
thats ok. Talking to your parents about it is probably your best bet. or if you have someone like a ah priest (equivalent)? getting them to talk to your parents or principle. :)
Report as
Sikhism is polytheistic which goes against everything Christianity believes in. You can not be truely be both no matter what labels you choose to place on yourself.
Report as
well im pagen and i still believe in the christian god but i dont believe that he/she is not the only one. you may not be able to understand this but it does not change the truth of it
Report as
Actually, Sikhism is monotheistic because the only believe in one formless God. There are the ten "teachers" (or Gurus.) The first was Guru Nanak who was followed in the Sikh way by his successors. They are not believed to be gods, only messengers.

Just get your hair cut. It's disrespectful to say you're something you're not.
