Well .. actually .. I know people who have provided their young'ns with a phone for emergencies. They have been taught how to call their parents, if they need help. This is particularly handy when a child is forced to spend time with an estranged parent. It's a measure of safety and security.
It's ridiculous. But this isn't the first I've heard of a 5-year-old having a cell phone. That child will grow up feeling entitled, and will not ever realize how rewarding it can be to work and wait for something. His or her parent(s) need their head(s) examined. There is absolutely no excuse for this. If the child is in danger, as someone else alluded to, then that child should be taken out of the dangerous situation. Period.
yes it is right. not only a phone... why don't you give him a car key? let him or her go to the pub or bar. Government should allow them to have a gun.. 5 years is a responsible kid. they will drink responsibly.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it if the child is using it for emergencies, but calling up all his/her little friends would not be worth it.they don't know the value of the phone and they will be costing their parents a phone bill calling everybody in the united states of america. At least get a phone when you know how to text. I think 11 and up is fine, it's not like having something you have to be 13 to have. It's just a cellphone, as long as they use it maturely and don't use up all their minutes.
kids shouldnt have cell phones, ipads, laptops, etc. untill they are absolutely needed. I hate seeing ten year olds with smart phones. Ever see the movie Idiocricy? Horrible movie, but its exactly what we are turning into.
No, a 5 year child should not need a phone. Simply because a 5 year child is usually always supervised, so there is no need for emergence phone calls. Which is the excuse a 13 year old be using to get a phone. You don't want your 5 year old to be playing games all the time, which is going to happen if you do.
Some families don't have a house phone. I know lots of families who just have cell phones. Heck, that's what I have, just a cell. I do not think a child should have a cell phone for most purposes people have a cell phone. BUT if they live in a family that has no house phone, I think it is fine to get them a phone that only allows calls, and only allows calls to their parent(s)' phones, or siblings' phones, if the child is away from the family members.
