Why do people still believe in God?

So many people make me angry when I ask them why they believe God exists and they say they have faith. Faith is useless, in fact, you could just have "faith" that there are invisible people in your room but can't be detected in any way.

Report as

Why on earth would you let something like THAT make you angry? Believe or not... its a personal choice but to get angry about it is really quite immature. Please grow up.

When the universe fell from His fingertips,
He decided He wanted some fellowship.
But the man and the woman would not submit,
So He made a better way
When the moment was right, He sent His own son,
And He opened the way so that everyone
Could have hope and believe that when time was done,
He'd be able to make us one.

To hear with my heart,
To see with my soul,
To be guided by a hand I cannot hold,
To trust in a way that I cannot see,
That's what faith must be.

Faith in it's self is a belief of something bigger than yourself, and obeying the rules that it says you should follow. I know that by nature we don't want to be ran by a long list of does and dont's. Sometimes it's not about proofs. Sometimes it's about giving all load of struggles up to someone else. To do that you have to give yourself, or some of yourself, up to that something else. If at any time you do that your placing faith to that. Whether it be to the keys to your home while your on vacation, or receiving help when your car breaks down in the middle of somewhere. You are forced to place faith in someone to take the load that you cannot carry.

Everytime I try to aruge otherwise it always comes to the point that there is SOMETHING outside of this world, and controlling the advancement. Most of the times not what I'd want or like, but in other times the greatest comfort. That SOMETHING is best answered, with everything I come across, the Bible. Everyother theory based regimen when taken deep enough has a hole, or flaw. Only the Bible, or Christianity holds up. The English term for that SOMETHING is GOD. I'm not the only one with questions, and let downs. I'm not the only one looking for the absolute answers. Christianity answers. That would probably be why so many still balieve in GOD.

You are right to think that faith alone is useless. Faith in faith, or faith for the sake of faith, is not in the Bible. Biblical faith is trust in a Person, the God Who reveals Himself from creation, or the God Who came to earth in the Person of Jesus Christ.

A Christian has faith (trust, confidence, reliance) in the revelation of God through the His Word. His Word, the Bible, having been vetted by history, by the miraculous, by fulfilled prophecy, by archaeology; and vetted by hundreds of years of skepticism.

Most of all, the Christian faith is based in believing that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. The Bible admits that without the resurrection, our 'faith' is useless and Christians are to be pitied. Those who have tried the hardest to refute the resurrection have failed; and many ended up embracing Christ.

I hope you realize that both the theist and the atheist live by faith. The simple reason is that neither has an exhaustive knowledge of every fact in the universe. So at some point both have to look at what the evidence is and from there make a statement of faith. I contend that the evidence for God is stronger than the evidence against God.

That evidence had been placed into an excellent book with the appropriate title, 'I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist', by Frank Turek and Norman Geisler.
I guarantee it will challenge even the most skeptical.

It mostly boils down to fear. If there were no fear of hell, no fear of not being in god's good grace then why would anyone choose to have faith at all? It's absurd and very hard to maintain due to it's nature of 'knowing' without actually knowing. Fear is what drives the whole thing. If god did not care whether or not you worshipped him or even believed he existed and there were no consequence after death people would probably act as though he is not there. I can tell you in my opinion it takes a level of gullibility to take anything on faith. I don't even hope any more as the way of the Buddhist suggests hope is suffering. Make me a promise and I shall walk away. I understand why and I can say with understanding that faith is not good for your karma but you have to have one or the other in any case. People want to believe that immortality is an option because most find the idea of terminality to be rather uncomfortable. Reincarnation is just not enough for some people so the idea of "heaven" is appealing. You may want to look into becoming a pastafarian. continue...

I was sort of half way through a thought. Some people feel they need a god in order to behave. Some people believe there acts are worthless without god involved. If you are strong willed and do not take any information and integrate it if it seems even a bit off or fishy you will go to hell like me. I'm pretty convinced though that hell will be dope if it exists at all, I do not think it is an afterlife retreat, more like a fiction but I am prepared to face the consequences of my actions as I haven't many cowardly bones in my body. I know it may seem stupid for people to believe but you did not grow up being indoctrinated and did not choose that for your self either. Many people are not born with the intuition that you and I are. It is a special brand of intuition that allows us to discern reality through a lens that observes only observable reality. May it serve you well. I agree that faith is useless.

Those who ignore physical causes have a natural fear born of doubt. Where there exists a power which to them is dark or unseen, from thence comes a desire to pretend the existence of invisible Beings, that is to say their own phantoms that they invoke in adversity, whom they praise in prosperity, and of whom in the end they make Gods. And as the visions of men go to extremes, must we be astonished if there are created an innumerable quantity of gods? It is the same perceptible fear of invisible powers which has been the origin of gods, that each forms to his fashion. Many people to whom it's important that mankind should possess such fancies, have not scrupled to encourage mankind, & they have made it their law until they have prevailed upon the people to blindly obey them by the fear of the future. It's indeed ironical that we reject the world of the savages; but we still perpetuate the theories the savages built upon the world - the theories of gods.

Perplexing isn't it? Faith has, of course published definitions, but believers in God may use the term "faith" to end the conversation--leaving you with an unanswered question and may avoid the possibility of verbally painting themselves into a corner. Faith can be over-used like the word "love" but I'll attempt to clarify "faith" within the context of religion: When I first gave a set of car-keys to my son I trusted he would handle it responsibly; and he has yet to breach that trust. Does this mean I have faith that he will return safely at the end of each trip? No. If he did not return or return safely then I would rely on my "faith" in God to help us handle the situation. Faith is trust in God over the long-haul, which remains constant regardless of circumstances knowing He will give us the strength to overcome adversity and tragedy. Our family has much experience with this. Faith automatically invokes God; and He will guide and direct us through the Holy Spirit and the Holy Bible. Believers understand this statement. As an evangelical Christian, I have to say that if someone states he has faith that invisible people are in the room--please get them some help!

Curious, are you really "curious". Your question seems to already include an answer. But let me offer you this. Faith is not just believing anything and saying "I have faith". I suppose there are people who do that, but it is not the way of believing in God. Faith in God is "reasonable Faith" That means that there are reasons. There are no reasons to believe in little invisible people in your room or whatever else you can think up. That's imagination. There are always questions we cannot answer about just about anything, but that does not mean that we believe in nothing. We come to a point of having sufficient proof and the rest is by Faith. Think about your own beliefs and you will find it is loaded with faith statements. How do you think the universe began? or life began? or how huge amounts of information could be coded into our DNA? or on, and on and on. How you answer will contain your faith statements.

Really? i hate to inject some reason in here, oh wait, i don't

The universe begun with the big bang and was proven as such by the cosmic background radiation (in the 70's!) and the red shift of galaxies moving away from us. Life began after the early molten Earth cooled and gained it's oceans via comet's water-ice and nucleotides during the late bombardment. The first life was a product of tiny bubbles containing various substances and said nucleotides from which life evolved. DNA is a supermolecule and was created via recombination and mutation, i.e. the beginning of reproduction.

Your faith answer and questions smack of Bill O'Reilly's eternal meme.

"I'll tell you why [religion is] not a scam, in my opinion. Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can't explain that. You can't explain why the tide goes in."

"OK then, how'd the moon get there? How'd the moon get there? Look you pinheads who attack me for this, you guys are just desperate. How'd the moon get there? How'd the sun get there? How'd it get there? Can you explain that to me?"

Umm wait.

LIGHT comes FROM the sun.

Or... how about the fact that there are two Gospels saying Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, while Luke asserted that John was already in prison?

Or... The fact that there are three separate and different versions of the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20, Exodus 34, and Deuteronomy 5)?

Or what about whats just wrong? Women, throughout the Bible, are subservient to men, often without legal rights, and men are free to sell their daughters into sexual bondage (Exodus 21:7-11)

I don't believe in anyone's gods. Are we to accept the rampant antisemitism of the bible?

Hatred of Jews and other non-Christians pervades the Gospel of John (3:18-20). Jews, he wrote, are children of the devil, the father of lies (John 8:39-44).

Jesus calls on his followers to love their enemies and to pray for their persecutors (Matthew 5:44), a radical concept in the days of the Roman Empire. He says we must never demean or insult our enemies. But then we read of Jesus calling his enemies "a brood of vipers" (Matthew 12:34).

Mainstream Christians can also cherry-pick the Bible to create a Jesus and God who are always loving and compassionate. Such Christians often fail to acknowledge that there are hateful passages in the Bible that give sacred authority to the rage, self-aggrandizement and intolerance of the Christian Right.

Holy books are not relevant in the 21st century. Keeping with the metaphor, let's put away childish things.

It does describe a history of anti-Semitism from other nations that continues today. But how could you conclude that the Bible teaches such a terrible thing. The Gospel is clear that it is for both Jew and Gentile.

I think it's because of our need for an "understandable world." When we're children, we believe the world is a logical system that we can figure out and we think the adults of the world must know how it works. But when we start to grow up we realize how truly unpredictable and changeable the world is, that no one actually knows what's going on, and that nothing is ever certain or permanent. Religion lets people believe there's something watching over them, something to make sure they get what they deserve, and something to punish the bad people. This lets them feel safe in an otherwise scary and unreliable world.

My thought is that children believe in nonexistent beings like Santa Claus and the tooth fairy until they are told that they aren't real. Belief of god is reinforced through the child's life. I fear you have confused faith and fact and have not investigated either as they pertain to the historic Christian worldview. 21st century "technology" is proving quite the opposite, that from the "simple" cell to the fine tuning of the universe, the evidence of intelligent design is exploding.

It's a theory, not a philosophy. But there'a a very strong possibility that people will lose faith when there is enough proof to deny the existence of gods. but seriously, if you were born into a different religion, THE God that you believe in now, would become a minority. You wouldn't be defending it now if you were born to believe in, say, polytheism, where you believe in multiple gods, you wouldn't believe in the one individual God. you might not even believe in Zeus now, because you have substituted him with your own god.

Quite a theory. In a world w/o truth your theory and mine are at worst on equal footing. I can live with mine, based on the resurrected Christ; and face death with hope.

Thats just it. In my opinion the bible is just stories. I dont think that everything in the bible is true. I do believe in god but some of the storys like Adam and Eve have been proven wrong. Does that mean the whole thing id wrong. When i was little my parents told me i could believe in what i wanted to and that all religions should keep me on the right track. I have faith because i just do and i think that is just what it is
Report as
But we can't just believe something and make it truth. Truth must match reality. A true story is still a story...but it can still be true. Nothing has been "proven" wrong. Skeptics have stated it to be wrong...and they have 'faith' that it might be wrong. Everyone lives by faith, even the atheist. But if God is real, He probably wants to reveal Himself. I believe He did; in a very tangible and physical way...the Person of Jesus Christ. I invite you to know Christ.

Well if adam and eve were really the first humans and that god made the world in a week. That has been proven wrong by evolutin which is seen through things like bones and images from times before us.The world was made over millions of years and we know that as fact. It is pure science and pure fact that is all no faith, fact.

Why do people NOT believe in GOD? Obviously you haven't checked into your SPIRITUAL side. You must SEEK HIM to FIND HIM, and maybe with all your HEART, all your MIND and all your STRENGTH. Then you will believe.

I can't find something that doesn't exist.
Report as
Why do you exist? If I don't believe you are real does that make you disappear. And if you are hidden from me, who is to say you don't exist because I haven't found you yet? To me you don't exist but to those that know you to them you are very real. And if all my life I try to find you and don't that still doesn't make you not exist. It takes as much faith to not believe as it does to believe....

hasenpfeffer: Your last sentence was good, the rest of it sounds like total corn flakes (gobblie-gook) !! This is how the devil speaks - in "gobblie-gook" (Charles Manson comes to mind). If you spent as much time seeking GOD as you did coming up with that paragraph, who knows, maybe you'd have a total change of heart (courtesy GOD's Grace) !!?!??

Thanks, for slamming me when I am on your side (God's side) WisdonSays. Did you dissect what I was saying or get confused? All I was saying is whether or not you believe in something doesn't make it's existence any more or less real. Remember we travel by faith on a path to find God. In the last day when he is reveled out faith will be made know. I don't see why this makes me Charles Manson and the devil? Bit your tounge!

hasenpfeffer: I like you, that you didn't blow me off. Why do they stop? It's really a spiritual thing. As you stop relating with GOD, He stops relating with you, or like - You may not have HIS favor, or grace. Seek TRUTH

Great question. I'm a follower of Jesus Christ and I believe He came down as the Son of God because when He said seek and you will find, knock and the door will be answered, He made a promise. I sought Him and I've found Him, He's the center of my life. I can't give you proof that God exists, but you can't prove He doesn't. Thats where we make a choice, what do we believe? As for me, based on my observations I truly believe there is a God and He loves us all very much, so much that He sent His only Son as the scapegoat for our sins. In order that we can know Him. Jesus is who He says He is, and because of that I know there is a God. Also scientifically the evidence I've seen points to a creator rather than an accidental existence. For example, in Genesis, the way that God creates the heavens( all of outer space in the Jewish form of writing) and the earth, lines up with scientific discoveries, like Pangea. And God said, "Let the water under the sky be GATHERED TO ONE PLACE and let dry ground appear." And it was so. God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:9, 10 NIV) all the continents fit together like puzzle pieces, how did Moses( author of Genesis) know this? Also in Isaiah,

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to live in. (Isaiah 40:22 NIV) He says the earth is round and that space is expanding, how did a man from 700-680bc. Know this? Simple the creator told Him. Does this answer your question?

Of course God exists. Most of those in the younger generation choose to believe otherwise only because their parents stopped believing--not in God--but in organized religion. You do not have to have a religion to believe in God. To me, all religions are just different 'long distance carriers' that lead to the same place. I don't belong to an organized religious group or church. But I love movies. When I see a movie that is so good it makes me want to cry, I KNOW GOD EXISTS. When I travel to a beautiful place and gasp at the scenic wonder, I KNOW GOD EXISTS. When you win a trophy for something, you should KNOW GOD EXISTS. When someone you love returns that feeling equally, then you KNOW GOD EXISTS. Without God, there is no moral compass in a person's life. If you believe in karma or 'what goes around comes around' then you KNOW GOD EXISTS.

Because God exists. You clearly have the wrong mind set if having faith makes you that angry. So many say God needs to show himself and the moment he does you deny it because your in denial to begin with. You dont want to see God. So therfore you wont. You could see Jesus in the sky and you still would not be able to comprehend it because you would not want to believe it. Check out some youtube videos man. God has a purpose for the internet too. All sorts of signs in the sky. But i know logic in most cases will turn them into a coincidence. Its your choice. Its up to you. But youre never going to see what you wear a blindfold to prepare for.

Isn't it rather u that's wearing the blindfold of reverence? Ask Jesus to show him in the sky, you will be amazed to see how many instantly believe. Remember, the case of Thomas?

Not having faith doesn't make me angry, people who shove their useless faith down my freakin throat or try to make me angry.

Thanks, cowboy!

For some reason, angry people think that ridiculing Christians they don't know (in a spiritual/religion Q&A forum) (on subjects they profess to neither care about nor believe in) will make them feel better. Makes sense??? Sad really. More likely conviction of guilt. I think it helps prove the existence of God, actually.
