Truth is people are just a**holes. We have this idea of what people should be like, believe in, look like, etc. And we take the advantage of the different people to make fun of them. All the racist jokes, rape jokes, religion jokes, fat jokes... They're all targeting, what some people believe to be people's "weaknesses" and being Mormon, to some people, is a "weakness" people make fun of. It's just life.
I don't know anyone that hates Mormons. What people hate is the fact that Mormons are enjoying multiple wives. by law you can only be legally married to 1 person. What that means is that the "extra" wives are all single mothers. So all the extra wives & children are collecting welfare. So John Q Mormon is being paid for 30, 40, 50 kids. He's married to his first wife, but all the others are single moms with no job-they just sit back & collect the money. Another thing people dislike is the prearranged marriage to 12 & 13 year old girls, that's the reason that the Feds were chasing some of the Mormon leaders- it's rape
They wear those white shirts and ride bikes with helmets and back packs. It just rubs people the wrong way when they do things like that. I'm kidding, I offer the people as much respect as everyone else and think there religion is no more ridiculous than the ones claiming to NOT be a cult. I think it's mostly cuz some people don't like how they go door to door to push their papers and dogma. I don't think it's a heinous act or anything but I've talked with people who get really angry about it when they get like 3 different religious groups doing the same thing to their house in one day. Personally I think it can be fun and I've even seen a youtube video where they started a water baloon fight with some d2d's. Intolerance is found for everything though so I wouldn't feel to special about it or anything.
For the same reason people hate Christians.... It's much easier to assume things than it is to actually learn about something before making judgements. Being faithful as you know can be hard at times, those who can't find answers to their questions or are blinded by their sin, just try to tear everyone else down. Remember that god knows the pain we endure in his name and we WILL be vindicated! Hold strong my sister and fight the good fight!
I can think of few. The religion today is not the same as it was when Brigham Young was alive. While not a typical trinitarian church, it's a pretty good influence on morals and ethics. My wife's favorite babysitter was Mormon, and she was wonderful with the kids. Her dad was also salt of the earth type.
Prejudice. Prejudice is a preconceived judgement, usually biased in nature, which is based on insufficient knowledge. An example of this is the comment by fritzmerde above. He is confusing Mormons with RLDS which is a break away group, not the Mormon Church. Live your religion and have confidence in your truth. Don't let others determine what or how you may be.
Let me offer some thoughts. I am not Mormon but have no hatred for Mormons. In fact they show noteworthy commitment and sincerity. So, one thing is not to interpret doctrinal disagreement, as strong as it may be, with hatred. Another thought is that there is a general anti-religion mood in our age, and we should expect that to result in opposition and even some hatred, aimed at all who are not so passive about their faith, but who are willing to speak out for their faith, and that would include Mormons. Finally, there are haters of all sorts around, and it is possible that some get more than their fair share of encounters with them. So chin-up. Paul said in Romans 8:18 that the sufferings of this world is not even worthy to be compared to the Glory God has promised those who follow Him. So follow hard after God to know Him and Jesus Christ, and live with purpose for that which Paul was speaking about. G
