Lots of good points on answers above, but don't be fooled into thinking driving a truck is going to make you tons of money....it will cost you lots of money! You can make a pretty good living, but your life has to be devoted to driving that truck. If the wheels aren't turning, you're not making money. Also entry level pay in the field can start anywhere from .08cpm to .15cpm (cents per mile) with time and experience, depending on the company you can earn closer to .50cpm, but with most companies limiting the speed on their trucks, the limit to number of hours you can drive, traffic congestion, and other hassles put a damper on the amount of miles you can turn. If you own your truck you can bring in a couple dollars or more per mile (depending on the freight), alot of times you average less than $2.00 per mile though. You also have to pay for the truck, all repairs and routine maintenance, base plates, permits, insurance, road tax, fuel tax, tires (and you wear tires running 125,000 miles per year), tools, food, and the list just goes on and on! FYI, the average cost of fuel per day in my truck (averaging 6.8 to 7.4mpg) is $1800.00.........did you get the PER DAY part?! ;)
Also factor in what you're loosing by being away from home weeks and months at a time.

You sound like you got a good thing goin!!! No, not disillusioned, just read that question after a long crappy day...one of those days when you encounter so many people who assume that if you drive a truck you're made of money...even when I run into guys that can't afford a meal! Now, don 't get me wrong...I'm more than frustrated with today's fuel prices, and the large group of undertrained, unprofessional "steering wheel holders" out there. (I'm sure you know what I mean)
Happy Trails,neighbor...keep the shiny side up!

Commercial divers make $100,000 a year or more. Deep-sea underwater welders work on oil platforms, nuclear powerplants, and underwater pipes. There are lots of commercial diving schools in the U.S. that are somewhat affordable, from about $15,000 up to about $25,000. You get your certification in about a year in a few different areas. Diving, welding, and CPR among others. It's pretty dangerous work though, and there are some health concerns from breathing nitrox gas and the high pressures you have to deal with. But, hey, work 10 years, save your money and retire early! Good luck, Bud. Peace!

FYI: Commercial drivers do not average $100,000 a year. Base salary is generally $60,000 after training pay rate ends.

That depends on the hours. I've been driving for 17 years.. How committed you are at your job, experience at it, and the field your in can fluctuate what you make. Myself, I work my @$$ off and gross over $110,000 /year.

And you said the all important part....you work your (beep) off!

Commercial DIVERS. Not Drivers. lol. You know, the dudes with the big round helmet with a hose attached that work 300 feet under the water?

Apparently, you don't even have to know how to read to become a truck driver. lol

Ok ok ok, you got me! Thanks for not assuming I needed glasses, just that I can 't read!
Report as
lol. I'd rather you couldn't read and were driving a truck than you need glasses and were driving a truck. hehe. I'm just messin' truckerlady. Peace, Sister. :)

If you're a computer geek, start a small business/company online. You don't even have to do much schooling, just a simple research and you're good to go. You could check out this article here, I think you might find interesting.

Well, do you have any marketable skills/trade. If not, are you a good sales person (can you sell ice cubes to Eskimos). Today you really need a grad. degree, 20 years ago a bachelors degree was fine, 20 years prior an Ass. degree worked, & 20 years prior to that a HS diploma might work. This country has had a huge swing in "what we do", we used to man. everything - you could work in many fields & be a union member & make good money. We don't make anything any more, we are a service oriented work force. Many jobs just aren't needed anymore- computers & robotics made man obsolete. The days of tightening nuts on a wheel as it went by on the assembly line won't get you 100K. Stay in school & go as far as you can-college is a blast. You don't want to look back @ 40 & say WTF. On the plus side-drugs will always turn a big profit.

If ya don't mind workin your tail off to earn said money: look into rough necking.
Workin on an oil refinery or a natural gas platform. Easy 20$+an hour. 3 weeks on 2 weeks off. Housing supplied.
Pack a bag, go to work, come home with BANK. I used to do it long ago.
On a side note: you can always try not being lazy.

Underground Coal mining is a great living. You can make as much as you want. Weekends, holidays, and even your birthday pay double and triple time at 30$ per hour. it's a good living.

No doubt there! I've kinda toyed with the idea of pulling a coal bucket, but I really don't live very close to the mines (at least from what I know of my new home state so far). I see lots of coal workers...they have these neat decals on their trucks. One thing I have picked up on...these guys may make good money, and I know they EARN every penny!
