We have a pet female raccoon and she gave birth to her 2nd litter and she has had very erratic behavior this time.

She has disappeared for 5 days now. With the first litter she was here everyday like clockwork to eat. Any suggestions on what could be causing this. Please help.

Female raccoons spend most of their time caring for their babies after giving birth, which lets them walk away to look for food or water and dens. They could spend time in dens trying to protect their litter from all kinds of enemies until they are able to walk out in open by themselves. Try looking for her from all possible dens beyond the ground or corners. If not, you could raise an alert to neighbors or consult from a pet care taker of what should be done. thank you. I have checked out the website you gave me already. I know their habits since she has been around for 2 yrs. now. She was here everyday with the first litter to eat and stayed around for several hrs. in the day time and then went back to them just before dark. But she was here everyday then. This time she has been very erratic and we just don't know why. She has only been here since she had them 4 wks. ago about 8 times. She does not stay near as long as she did the first time. Maybe she is just being more careful this time. I just hope she comes back soon. Thanks for your help.

Why not?

Bookworm's question was my first response too. Raccoons are not domesticated animals and do not make for good pets. In at least some states, maybe all of them, it's illegal to keep a wild animal as a pet.

I had a 3 legged racoon that lived in my house when my kids were little. He went in and out of the house as he pleased and even slept in bed with my youngest. They make great pets when legalities allow.

I love animals (5 furry, four-legged critters live in my house), but no way would I have a raccoon as a pet. You might have had the exception.

He was a good boy. We found him in the road with one crushed leg when he was a baby. Took him to the vet for surgery and he was our little buddy ever since. While we had him we also had 2 dogs and a few cats.

your right and if you find them as a baby sick they are wonderful pets.
