What would be the benefit to buying and up-rite vs a canister vac and vise versa?

I've had several different brands of vacuum, but they all suck. Haha! No pun intended. I've had bagged, and bagless. They all have probs with suction and debris getting stuck in the hose. The one I have now is a stupid Dirt Devil I've had for only a couple years. Its a bagless. I've changed the filter, the belt...everything, and its just trash. Won't pick up, and constantly clogs up. Grrr!!! So now on the hunt for something better, but not Dyson pricey. My mom always had a canister. I'm wondering if those are better since they don't have as many twists and turns in the hose. Any thoughts?

Personally I think uprights do a better job on raising the pile on carpet. I like canisters for vacuuming the car out but just because they have a longer hose. You know, I agree Dysons are really expensive, but I bought one a few years ago and it honestly is the best vacuum I have ever used, I moved and left it with my sister and am SO sorry I did. I bought something cheaper here and it is horrible, so now I am saving to get another Dyson. For me it is better than buying a new vacuum year after year and not being happy with any of them.

True! My sis-in-law has one. She swears by it. I wish I had the money for one right now. The devil isn't doing the trick...AT ALL!!! Perfect name for it, btw.

I believe an upright vacuum is better as it needs less energy to use considering you need to drag the canister vacuum when using it. Self-propelled models make things even better. But, as with religion, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to the canister vs. upright vacuum battle; the right one is the one you choose. In my long life I've had many vacuum cleaners, they all last a couple of years. They all break or stop sucking, the worst being a Dirt Devil. 8 Years ago I bought a Dyson and it is still working strong. The Dyson is the best vac I ever had and probably the last one I have to buy. The upright is about the best for carpets.

I agree with the Devil being worst! Its lasted the shortest amount of time of all of them. The best one I've ever had was Hoover. I got rid of it when I moved to a house that only had Spanish tile floors. Wish I still had it.

I think my Dirt Devil lasted less than a year, then I got a Hoover Wind Tunnel, which was pretty good, and lasted a couple of years. I am VERY happy with my Dyson and have had it about 8 years with no problems.
