What happens to babies with drugs in their system... Would the hospital lie to the parents about keeping the baby there at the hospital?

My nephew was born last night and I know my sister did drugs all the way up until she was 7 and a half months pregnant. I am worried on whether she will lose him. The hospital told her that when she leaves the baby has to stay because he has an infection.

The doctors/nurses wouldn't lie. Why would you even want your sister to keep the baby? If she did drugs during her pregnancy, then she probably isn't a very good mother (or even cares about the baby at all)

I love my sister and I do not want her to hurt because of her actions.

If she doesn't hurt because of her actions she won't learn the lesson that follows the actions, losing the baby, which could help her want to stop.

@Samantha If she doesn't get hurt because of her bad actions, she won't learn any lesson.

I am not saying she should not have some kind of repercussion for doing the drugs I just know that she says she has always wanted to be a mom and I know how it hurts to lose a child and never know if you are gonna get them back or even see them. of course when I almost lost my daughter it was her dad trying to run with her. But I just want the best for the baby and I want her to be able to see the miracle of everyday with her son.

What's best for the baby may not be to be with your sister. If she's clean and has a good home for the baby, then okay.

I don't think the hospital staff would lie to her. However, I certainly hope she has stopped using drugs!!
Do you know if they've done any drug-testing, on your sister or her baby? If they have, I'm sure they would tell her the results of the tests & what their plan is for her & the baby.

I have two kids of my own and I never even knew they did a drug test on them. They never told me anything but I got to keep my kids. As far as I know she has been clean for a month and a half. We were told she through down drugs and cigarettes. It just strikes me as odd that the baby was fine 3 hours ago and now they say he can not go home with his mom.

Hospital staff lying to her about why the baby can't go home would definitely be unethical, and is probably illegal, as well. It's common for newborns to develop infections shortly after birth. Sadlly, it may even be something related to her drug use, perhaps even a form of withdrawal on the baby's part. The hospital can't keep her baby w/o telling her what's going on, telling her why they are keeping the baby.
I hope she really has given up drugs & hope everything works out for her & her baby! Best Wishes!

Thank you. All that we know is the baby developed a lung infection this morning and they told her that tomorrow they will be releasing her but the baby has to stay.

Sorry to hear that, but I'm sure they'll take very good care of the baby & as soon as he is better, he will be released. As far as the mom going home, that's just the way hospitals work these days -- they kick you out ASAP!
Take Care!
