Has the gunman in Aurora been said to have any motive? If so, what?

Report as

He probably focuses too much on action movies AND is mentally sick at once.

A funny thing to think is that while everyone was being shot in Aurora, I was at home playing videogames and eating toast.

Funny? There's nothing funny here. See my comment under Shiny regarding neuroscience.

I mean funny as in odd. I thought "odd" was the true meaning of funny.

Police are questioning. He was made up with dyed red hair, calling himself the Joker. It sounds like a mental case, so far.

Hi, Pate. Do you mind if I ask you something about neuroscience? From what I recall, you're a neuroscientist, right?

Thanks.

Hey Marcus, new nanotechnology still in the study stage has been shown to reverse synapse damage. It'll probably be 10 years before the FDA approves anything, but there is some hope for you.
Report as
What do you mean? Hope about what?
Report as
I may have got you mixed up with someone who had a disease that was causing synapses to decay. The damage is currently irreversible, but current studies have reversed synapse damage, leading medical practicioners to have hope for marketable technology soon.
Report as
You may have had the impression that I have a disease because awhile ago I mentioned my synapses breaking because I thought it happened to everyone. Now I know it doesn't, so I know my synapses aren't breaking. But I don't want to cancel out your concern if someone you know really does have a disease, so don't rely completely on my thought of this.

His motive was he's a selfish nut who has no value for life and was seeking attention

Looking for factual information, but that you. Has it officially been said that his motive was to get attention?

What possible motive could fuel such behavior?

Copycat fan. Revenge against former employer. Copycat revenge against a perceived corrupt justice system. Insanity that motivated him to believe he was really a movie character. Revenge against the theatre for selling out of tickets and not having one for a fan such as himself. Copycat plot get arrested and locked up in a mental hospital for the sake of repeating events from the previous movie. On drugs not realizing what he was doing. Working for someone else (it has already been said he was working alone though). There's always a motive. Those are a few that are potentially applicable, but I want to know reality.

Not yet. police and the FBI are investigating. That man deserves to die. For all those people who were injured: you are in my prayers. For the people who's lives were taken last night: May you rest in peace.

I live very close to that theater, and I'm considering myself lucky that none of my friends or family were there when the shooting occurred.

What good would killing him do? We don't know motive, there's been no trial, and we simply skip to killing him? Do that and he wins. The events of the movie are repeated.
Report as
That man has killed more than 12 people and more people will probably die from their injurys, No matter what his motive was, He is a bad person.
Report as
I agree entirely, but I see no good from killing him.

What I heard is that he had lots of education but couldn't get a job, so he was probably angry at the world (not to mention INSANE)

Insanity is for the courts' doctors to decide. But angry for having a high education and not being able to get a job is a good speculation. Though I'm not sure how high of an education he could have at age 24. It's not often 24-year-olds have masters degrees even unless they are advanced. But it is definitely possible.

I think he had a masters in neuroscience from UC Riverside (or that may have just been his bachelors) and was approved to get his PhD in neuroscience also (but then I think he was also in the process of quitting the PhD thing or something) So a lot of people said he was a bright kid. I seriously doubt somebody who's sane could have killed so many people; just doesn't seem possible...
Report as
Thanks. Bright kid. Most geniuses do go insane. I've been there myself, but never to the extent of harming someone else. I hope he is insane and that they can treat it. He could definitely contribute back to society after finishing his PhD behind bars. Not that it would make up for his crime, but I hate to see a brilliant mind go to waste by a needle just for some sense of justice.

Yeah, weird huh?? Reminds me of the movie "A Beautiful Mind" (but I highly doubt this kid was a real genius.. Bright, smart, but not "a Beautiful Mind" genius lol) I honestly would not want him back in society.. He's destroyed a lot of lives, and deserves to rot in prison. To commit something that evil, you couldn't possibly go back to being a decent human being. I just don't think our society needs people like him! We've got plenty of other bright kids who don't murder innocent people.
Report as
Not in society. He's nearly got a PhD in neuroscience. Keep him as an inmate in an insane asylum and let him work from there.
Report as
annaruby
Well I don't think he was that close to getting it, he was probably just starting with the process. Is that possible??
Report as
Anything is possible. Currently the law provides higher education to inmates. But to be in a research position it would require someone to appeal to some authority. Not likely it'd ever happen. We all as Americans prefer vengeance via justice to undeserved mercy that might be able to change the world.

He was a left wing, registered Democrat and a member of the Black Bloc Occupy group. He recently dropped out of school for his PHD. He graduated from college in CA. He is 24 years old and absolutely crazy.
He has no ties to the Tea Party as ABC news tried to again insinuate this morning. For facts watch Fox News and their affiliates. The rest are already pushing their agenda to ban guns and have government more powerful. Some even blaming Rush Limbaugh?? Total sickening liars. Shame on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC. All propaganda for the left networks and why Fox has the most viewers and growing. The rest lie at their own peril.

None of this addresses the question at hand. Please save your advertising for news networks to questions that ask about them. His political affiliation likewise is irrelevant.
Report as
All of this is relevant as to guessing his motive as everyone here is doing. All guesses.
Report as
There are millions of left-wing democrats and thousands of folks in the Occupy movement. While I don't support the movement, association with it does not give any reason to suspect someone of wanting to dress up as the joker and shoot out a theatre. And your personal feelings regarding FOX, which many agree with, are also not relevant.
Report as
I'm not arguing with his statements. This site is for giving relevant answers to questions, not advertising for a network or campaigning for a political party.

Yeah I agree with Jk^ him being a democrat has nothing to do with the guy's insanity, and your (bigred's) answer about how networks are lying yadda yadda are completely irrelevant to this guy's motives.
Report as
Red, please share where you got your info since I can't find it on AP, BBC or any other reputable news site.
