Whether or not you believe in God, do you believe in the power of prayer?

If you believe that God answers prayers, or if you believe that a collective consciousness concentrated on a specific topic can affect events, I'd like to know. If you don't believe in either, I'd like to know that too. Recently, I had several people here in Ask offer prayers for me, and I can find no other explanation for what happened aside from some sort of intervention. I know what I believe... but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

I believe. There were prayers sent out for Guss yesterday here on ASK, and last I heard he came through his second surgery and is awake.

For sure, He brought the rain I needed just when I needed it. Many of my friends here in Ask knew that if I didn't get rain soon, I would be wiped out, and done farming for good. Many offered prayers, and two hours after the weather reports said that the rains had bypassed my area, the rain started. I got just enough, just in time to save my crops. I do in fact believe in God, and I do believe in the power of prayer. The reason why a lot of people don't believe in prayer is because in a lot of scenarios, their prayers don't seem to be answered. But, God works in mysterious ways. I think that something good will always be the outcome of a situation that seems to be unsolved and pointless. If you are a strong believer and you believe in the power of God and your dreams, then I personally think they will come true.
Hope I helped :) :) :)

Prayer changes peoples brains and can be measured scientifically. One can believe it is the act of praying that does this and not believe in any supernatural power behind it.
Report as
Thanks for your thoughts, hunterdude!
Report as
Add a comment...

Prayer can have both positive and negative effects, according to scientific studies. It has to do with how your brain operates regarding prayer. Frantic prayer by a worried mind often causes more worry. Patients going into life-critical surgery have a lower chance of survival if they know others are praying for them. However, when one stops relying on emotion or the prayers of others and focuses his or her mind on reaching out to God in order to discern God's will, these folks are changed in their minds (and brains) and their body often acts in miraculous ways, sometimes even affecting the bodies of others around them. I don't believe in the power of prayer. Instead, I believe in the power of God. I attribute these changes to God, and I believe all power to create and re-create ultimately comes from him. But atheists and skeptics will instead believe in the power of the pray-er, attributing the change in self and others to legitimate, empirical data. Which is right? I cannot say. But my faith is that God will be who he says he will be and will fulfill his promises to us via re-creation when it lines up with his ultimate will.

This is for the positive aspect. The negative aspect comes from sources on Ask, so they are not as reliable, but I trust them. When one feels they can "let go and let God" because of the faith of a friend while in critical surgery, their brain doesn't fight for survival as much. "God helps those who help themselves." These again are my personal thoughts based on answers provided by the Ask community that did cite a statistical source, but I didn't check its credibility.

I absolutely believe in the power of prayer! An example happened yesterday...a mourning dove flew into our glass window, which happens often. This time, however, the bird looked as if it had internal damage, since it was coughing up blood and was on its back, struggling and breathing heavy. I have a rescue technique for birds, but was afraid to approach the bird due to its reaction. I checked on the bird every few minutes and saw it slow its breathing and stop kicking its feet...blood still pouring from its mouth. I prayed for healing on this bird and then asked my son(8 yrs old) to pray as well...and told him about the power of prayer. An hour later, bird was barely breathing., eyes closed. Continued praying, and checked on bird every 15 minutes. After 2 hours of praying with my son (we are animal lovers!), we looked and the bird suddenly flipped over, and stood up! It stayed there for 2 more hours and eventually was able to fly away. I said another prayer and thanked God for sparing the life of the dove...they mate for life, and the thought of its mate being alone broke my heart. BTW, I absolutely love your posts and answers...you show that you truly like to help others......you remind me of myself. :-)

Absolutely not. If you want to affect your life or someone else's life you should just go out and take action instead of waiting for your prayers to be answered. Instead of relying on Him to correct more than half of your problems - like some Christians do - I wish Christians would instead stand up their own fights. I have a belief of my own - if you want a better life, go out and attempt to earn a better life, but don't bother God - he's probably getting sick of hearing everyone's sob stories.

At first I didn't understand your question, but I read further and did. It's a great question (esp for ManOfKnowledge).
*This is my dealio:
I grew up in a family where I was raised Catholic but only did Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation. We also didn't go to church, except for our major Holy holidays (Ash Wed, Easter, Christmas)- which, in my opinion, is a little phony. But I guess it's better than nothin'!
Although religion/spirituality wasn't a discussion topic in our household, I was grateful for the foundation for belief, of sorts. When I was grammar school aged, I also attended a friend's Baptist church and was 'Saved' in their religion. I had another friend that was Presbyterian and attended summer camp for a couple of years. Most of the mentioned experiences were good ones except when I attended Bible study one Sunday and was told that Amy Grant was boycotted by the church cause she was a sinner and sang lustful lyrics. Ohh-kay? I wasn't aware of any particular song that was considered to be overtly sexual/lust-ridden. Even at around 11 yrs old, I found that to be and a tad extreme and from that point on, I took most of what that teacher said with 'a grain of salt'.
So fast fwd to the teens and I somehow became an athiest in my quest for answers to every topic. There just was no DANG 'PROOF'. So that lasted a while until I experienced something that turned the world as I 'knew' it- upside down.
OK, NOW BRACE YOURSELF- THIS MAY BE SHOCKING TO SOME:
The event that ocurred that 'proved' to me, the existence of spirits (even restless, purgatory or evil) and therefore 'proved' the existence of God to me.

A friend of mine at the time (who had 'come out of the closet' to me a few months prior) and decided that it would be interesting to try the ouiji board 'game' by Parker Brothers. So, after 45 mins of sitting in candle light, chanting away, in the hopes of 'drumming up some spirits'- the enclosed pointer-thingie started to move under our fingertips. (Just texting this story, now, gives me the 'heebie jeebies'-yuck). At first my buddy thought I was moving it, but we both swore up and down that neither of us were tampering. Feeling it shoot around under my fingers really freaked me out. Who- or what-ever was moving the pointer was actually answering questions appropriately and we supposedly 'spoke' to a multitude of different entities claiming to be from all over the country and in different situations. We continued 'playing' every day, at different times of the day over the course of around two weeks. It was scary and thrilling at the time. We then kept getting this particular, menacing entity that called itself a one letter name that kept spelling out obscenities and scrambling the messages. So we got bored with it and quit. A short while later I came across a boarder at a friend's house that happened to be studying to be a priest. In short, he warned me that any spirit that was with God wouldn't be accessed by that sort of medium. He also said that even a person who is an athiest is generally protected by God against restless/evil spirits, but as soon as you attempt to enter another dimension- you become vulnerable and are basically on your own. He told me some examples and I got totally wigged out. Before I had spoken to him, I always felt weird and that I was never alone (in an eerie way). Either he told me or I just chose to, but I threw the damned thing in the dumpster, hoping to close the doorway and to feel better. It took me awhile to feel normal again.
**CONTINUED A-GAIN!**

I know this is a totally unorthodoxed way of finding God but here I am, converted to Presbyterianism and I frequent Sunday services. My church is awesome and I know I'm on the right path, spiritually in my life.
So, to answer your question: yes I do believe in the power of prayer. I believe it is paramount in one's relationship with God. I have proven to myself over and over again that when I turn my troubles over to God and surrender to his will- I am NEVER let down. Most of the time the outcome is unexpected, but in hindsight, God has always given to me not necessarily what I wanted, but always what I needed for one reason or another. Faith is a true test. I got lucky with an experience that I considered to be tangible (and not necessarily originating from a righteous path- who's to say?) but the moral of the story is that I got there (still a journey always) and yes, prayer DOES work.
Keep prayin' sista!

Thank you so much, MissLisaDi... it really means a lot that you took the time to share your story with me/us. I've lost 4 friends in the past two weeks... one married couple to a motorcycle "accident" in which an elderly driver made an illegal left-hand turn in front of them, and another married couple, which, when he found out his wife had lost her job, he shot and killed her and then himself. In the midst of this heartbreak, I found myself having a flare up of my MS. On top of that, I was watching my crops die from lack of rain, and my fiance left me. But many friends, in "real" life, and also here in Ask, prayed for me, and I have made it through so far. Rain came just in time to save my crops, and I have found solace in helping my friends' children through this awful time. In helping them, I have no time to feel sorry for myself for the loss of whom I believed to be the love of my life. God makes it possible for me to get up every morning, and still be able to find the joy in a sunrise, a newborn calf, the beautiful life-giving rain. It would have been so much easier to just give up. But a still, small, insistent voice within me refused to let me. God's love was just so much larger than my despair that giving up simply wasn't an option.

I believe God answers prayer. The God that I believe in and pray to is the God, Jehovah, described in the Bible, the Father of the Risen Saviour, Jesus Christ. He has proven Himself to be faithful in my life in ALL that I have learned of Him. And HIS SON JESUS came and took abode in my heart and life through God's Holy Spirit.
Yes, I believe in the power of prayer. I believe and have seen it to be fully effective in my life and in the lives of others for every topic and every situation that could possibly or did possibly exist for which I or others prayed. If one knows the Lord and talks to the Heavenly Father, God listens. And, God speaks as well. Yes, I believe in prayer.

No. If there's any power of prayer, there wouldn't have been any holocaust. If prayer had any power, there wouldn't have been crusades, murders, rapes & wars. If prayer had any power, there wouldn't have been any cancer, insanity or deadly diseases. If prayer had any power, there wouldn't have been hunger, starvation & child abuse. If prayer had any power, a mother wouldn't have to clasp a dead children in her breast.

God doesn't answer every prayer. I thought everyone knew that.

Is it? I find the bible says something like this "if two of u ask something together, it will be given"? Or, say, "ask, and u shall receive"!!

Well, if you remember, I did the rain dance for you. My neighbors thought I was nuts when they saw me in my front yard dancing and chanting. I guess that was kind of a prayer to all of the gods there may be. So, with all of the positive energy sent your way, yes I believe it works.

Matthew 18:19-20
Again I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them.

Can you please, with collaboration with another (or as many as you would like to take) devout Christian, pray, so that god eradicates cancer forever from mankind? Or say, god eradicates child abuse till kingdom come? Not only mankind will be grateful to your goodness if you succeed, but even god will be happy with your honest motive to help the helpless. Think about the ultimate good if u can do it!! The purpose of Satan shall be forever lost from human hearts! No man shall ever make a rebellion against the love of god! Not one single human soul shall be ever be lost from your god's eternal grace!!

Yesterday I saw a man, one who reminded me a great deal of my husband, with a tshirt on that said"Cancer Sucks". He had a large scar on the back of his bald head and was moving rather slow. He was tall and still strongly built built but moving slow, and my very first prayer for him was that he come to know our Father through his situation, not that he even be healed. You have to open your mind. You see if he comes to know God and the unthinkable still happens, he was still truly healed!!!

The ultimate good is to glorify God. I don't understand why babies have to be sick or hurt. I know that it affects everyone and that God does not "do" this to people. And yes 666 I will agree in prayer with you right now that all suffering should stop.

More than anything! I think that's why I find it so easy to believe when others struggle, I've seen the power of prayer in my own life and although I can't say I always understand his ways, I know my prayers get answered.

I am atheist. I do not believe that prayer will do anything. God is omnipotent and omniscient, thus he know everything that will ever happen. He's know this since he created the universe. With all of this being said, then everything that will ever happen already has, thus nothing can change this.

I've seen prayer work... But then again had I done nothing at all I'm not convinced the same events may not have arisen. The thing about prayer is that you get the same results without them. You may as well not pray. I don't and my life is great. Do I believe it works? It may as well not be there.

Two hands working can do more than a thousand hands clasped in prayer. Surely everyone sees the truth in this, right? "I'll pray for you." Never has more utterly useless, emotionally disinfected drivel been uttered!

Well idk about there being a God, but I certainly believe there is someone out there. I have no idea who, but I'll do my best to find out who and whenever I really want something to or not to happen, I'll always do my best to hold up my end of the line.
