It's been on a downhill slide since the lie that got us into Vietnam as well as the insertion of religion into a secular government - combined with insanely unfair tax laws and corporations that outsource labor to foreign countries at the sacrifice of American employment, the assault on the educational systems, assaults on personal liberties - especially regarding women, assaults on the intentions of our founding fathers for a true democracy - not a quasi oligarchical plutocracy with 1% of the population in control of 99% of the wealth of the nation.

brad: It's even more insidious than what I posted - all of these actions are influenced by a small plutocracy - that dictates where our money comes from. America borrows from these privately held money sources - at interest - their economic power has now infiltrated just about every aspect of American life. Did you ever wonder what backs the debt note issued by the privately owned, Federal Reserve central Banks? Answer: nothing tangible - Nixon took us off the gold standard - and the further control of our economy - our liberties - what it means to have personal sovereignty in America - by issuing make-believe money (at interest) to the government and regular consumer banks - also called, "fiat money". Wars, devaluations, recessions, foreclosures, national debt, the student loan repayment crisis, and much, much more all come under the auspices of the greatest successful scams ever pulled off. Einstein even noted that the destruction of empires would always be economic at the root. The USSR was just one example.

Well you should read this piece by Charley Reece, a now-retired editor and columnist for the Orlando Sentinel (column was syndicated through King). It was originally penned in 1984 & updated in 1995. Check out this snopes site copy which has the most accurate reproduction of his thoughts which are 100% valid today. http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/reese.asp

Cere is right. I think it might of had it's roots a little earlier than vietnam. Our founding fathers never intended on career politicians. That, I feel, is one of the main causes of our problems. And you left out when our government gave up the right to coin it's own monies to the federal reserve, a private bank, they made a huge mistake that changed the direction of our country's economy for the worst.

In 1913 we gave away our sovereignty by the establishment of a parasitic, privately owned, central banking system - now with 12 super-banks called "The Federal Reserve" - that lends money to our government and consumer banks at interest. This same plutocratic mysterious organization has manipulated more than just America - they sunk money into the Bolsheviks - until that turned into the disaster of Communism - and then sunk money (through what is today known as "CitiCorps"), into a rabid anti-Semite wall-paper hanger in 1930's Germany - to stem the Communists. Their only allegiance is to themselves and their "New World Order" cronies - they've got the media, the politicians, the consumer banks, Wall Street, and the mega-corporations responsible for our food supply, drugs, housing, etc. - in their pockets. Evil truly does exist in the world. And no, I'm not a conspiracy theorist.

The US government and its politicians are a kind of intended illusion that each American has some say in what happens to our country - we don't - we are "owned" by a powerful international small plutocracy that controls the wealth via the money supply - of which the US government is in great debt to - at interest. These plutocrats are globalists - they're very good at hiding in plain sight - and many of them are not even Americans. They economically hold America hostage through their privately owned 12 banks, called "The Federal Reserve" - want to see how powerful they are? Take out a dollar bill and closely read the seal: "Federal Reserve Note" - lent to the Treasury - at interest - which drives down the value of that currency - a kind of accepted inflation - making us forever in debt to them - we can't even establish our own currency - our loaned money is more of a "belief system" (called "fiat money"), with no hard assets - like gold and silver to back it (JFK tried to issue US Notes to wean us off the Fed - look what that got him).
