DON'T Overlook. Read description. It's long but important.

When will the government ban guns? Logically, it was time after Columbine! Now with the theater tragedy, how much more will we take? Look at Canada! Less guns, and about a 100th of the gun murders the US suffers! We don't need em! And as much as we think they're essential, they're simply not! Gun tragedy's are not going to stop, if we don't do something about it! And yes, criminals will find a way, but if police are looking for the Psychos before they do something really bad, isn't it worth it? I'm so done with the debates. If banning guns saves the life of one person, its worth banning them. Please give your opinions.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

It could be a knife, rope, shovel, baseball bat...
Report as
Yep, but would the death toll be as high? Not even close.
Report as
Just so you know, I personally do not own a gun. But we the people have a right to legally own them. Making the laws more strict to get one only makes it harder on the honest people. The bad guys don't follow the rules...

Exactly right Kuu

Thanks Tony.
@123green321 - If they want a high death toll and drama, they'll find a way to do it. Like I said, banning guns only stops the honest people. A high death toll can be obtained without guns...driving a vehicle through a crowd of people, deadly gas bomb, I don't know what else off the top of my head because I'm not a criminal. But where there's a will, there's a way.

I know that's true, because that's our world, but all I'm saying is it's worth banning them if it saves one person, which I'm sure it would.

What saves one person can also leave thousands vulnerable...

Look at Canadas statistics. Our neighbors. I have family there. They aren't obsessed with guns! They're just like us, but there's places there where they don't have to worry about about locking doors. Now, it's true we've always been a bit more Pro Gun. We fought a war for our independence. They asked. But the point is, maybe we have something to learn...
Report as
I could have sworn that when I was watching the news last night that one of the young ladies who was murdered in the movie theater had been in Canada recently. She had been at a mall there and stepped outside for some fresh air, while she was out a gunman went in and shot up the food court killing people. It can happen anywhere.

There are places here in America too where you don't have to worry about locking your doors. Just not in the cities.

We will always have something to learn from others. But taking our right to bear arms is not the answer.
Report as
That right was made hundreds of years ago. Times have changed. And Canada has close too 100 gun murders a year. We have closer to 11,000. Ya it can happen anywhere, but it happens so much more here.

I don't think they will ban them. It's our constitutional right to bear arms. However with that being said I think they are going to make it so it becomes a lot tougher to own or buy a gun.

That is basically banning them. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED means no laws preventing anyone from carrying.

More people will die if lawful citizens are unable to defend themselves. When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

We like to think that that is the truth, but honestly, we really don't need em.
Report as
Personally I don't have one but taking them away from law abiding citizens is like throw the to the lions
Report as
how many armed citizens could have prevented that massacre?
Report as
Even if you have a gun legally, every state has different laws. In most states you can't just carry one on your belt or in your purse. I have a friend who is a truck driver. She has plenty that she'd like to carry with her, but she can't because of the laws. There are plenty of dangers to truck drivers that we normal people wouldn't even think of. Some of them might sleep a whole lot better at night knowing they could protect themselves when someone comes to highjack their load of copper. Just saying...
Report as
I'm just trying to say that taking them away from the honest, law abiding citizens isn't the answer. ONce the criminals know that we don't have anything to stop them, we have just given them all the power.

123 if someone was about to kill your family member and all you had was a phone to call the cops, do you think they will wait for you to dial 911 and for the cops to come and stop them? Guns are not the problem. They are the cure for the problem.
Report as
One person with a gun could have stopped the massacre with a shot to the gas masked face.
Report as
Right you are, sir ^ BigRed
Report as
@LMO: In that specific situation, none. But in just about every other shooting you can find, it would have helped.

@Tony: I love that saying in your answer. Haha.

we as Americans have a right to bear arms...that was decided over 200 yrs ago...things are very different now. I don't think its possible to ban guns but illegal possession and use of them should be much more strictly enforced and it should harder to get one.

Making it harder to get one will only affect law abiding citizens. It will still be easy for the crooks and make us vulnerable to living under a dictatorship.

when I said harder to get one I meant harder to get illegally. law abiding citizens have it hard enough already

If they were to ban guns, we the innocent suffer. Criminals will get what they need even if there is a ban. Goodness, now how will we protect ourselves if a criminal was to come at us? Yell, scream, simply say no, don't do it? Words and a phone can't protect you. Gun control has nothing to do with what happened. Common sense will tell you this. The way I see it, the only gun control we need is simply using both hands. I also want to add, if you feel Canada is more safe, no one is stopping you from moving there.

I agree with Kuuipo on this, & LMO6869 makes a very good point! Unfortunately, All the rules, regulations, etc in the world would not have stopped this insane man from doing what he did. If I understand what I read correctly, He purchased every weapon legally. He had no criminal history, & was attending the Univ. of Colorado to obtain his freaking PhD!! .....SMH....The whole tragedy is mind boggling to me!! I found this article very interesting & informative -

http://abcnews.go.com/US/aurora-colo-batman-shooting-71-victims-largest-mass/t/story?id=16817842

Unfortunatly, banning guns completely won't stop these things from happening!
Sex offenders are supposed to register where they live - do they?? Not always!
Certain Drugs are illegal - has this stopped drug use?? No!
Prostitution - illegal. But still the oldest (& apparently profitable) profession in the world!
Look at what happened during prohibition......

I'd love to see tragedies such as this NEVER happen again! But how can anyone predict if or when someone is going to snap?? What's next.....banning movies?
This nut job thought he was "The Joker" from the freaking movie for cryin out loud!!! WTH?!?!

Really though, it's a messed up situation, and quite sad. The real sad thing is the numbness that society has on incidents like this. OK, do you see how well the war on drugs is working??? Drugs are already illegal and guess what, people are still doing them all the time!!! A ban on guns would make about as much sense as choppin off your own foot. Anything the gov't tries to make illegal only turns the illegal activity into a black market type product. There are no simple answers to these questions, you can't please everybody no matter how hard you try.

They should make you take a course to legally on a gun or do they do that in the states. In Canada you have to take a course before you can buy a gun and if you want a hand gun or a machine gun you have to take the restricted gun course and you can only shoot hand guns and other restricted guns at the range not allowed to take them anywhere besides to and from the range. We love our guns in Canada to, but not just anybody can go and buy one and carry it around.

Guns and SWAT gear may be legal, but tear gas and armed explosives are not. That obviously means the theater gunman didn't mind grabbing something illegal, considering he had those two illegal things.

Canada may have lower murder statistics, but Canada also isn't high on coffee, rush our, drugs and inappropriate media from childhood.

You're correct; if guns were to be banned, criminals would still get ahold of them. That means only criminals would be the ones with guns, besides the police who do not have cars fast enough to beat a bullet. It takes a gunman 3 seconds to shoot someone while it takes the police 3 minutes or more to arrive. Regarding stopping criminals before they do harm: that's completely impossible. The police aren't psychic and they can't arrest someone for what they'll potentially do. So in order to help, we don't take away the bystanders guns; we allow the bystanders to act.

I don't recall the article I read mentioning anything about how or where he got the gas & gear.... Very good point that I didn't think about!
And I also wondered why the alarm did not go off on the emergency exit door that he propped open to sneak the guns & gas back into the theater! I thought those doors sounded an alarm if opened! ???

The United States government does not have the right to ban guns in America, as it would be totally unconstitutional. Even if it were possible - that would leave firearms in the hands of criminals (who will always be able to get them) and leave the rest of us defenceless. Not a good idea!
