No matter how nicely you say it, the meaning is the same. Be nice about it sure but he will still be hurt. Do you really need to tell him straight up that you don't want to talk to him? Can you not just start distancing yourself & let it happen gradually? I know honesty I'd the best policy but if there's another way around it maybe try that to spare his feelings a little. good luck :)

Whenever he tries talking to say "I'm sorry, can't talk right now" and soon he'll start to get it and not talk to you, or you could just tell him not to talk to you or you could always act really weird and too crazy
if they call you ; tell them you're too busy ,if they text you don't text back ,and if they see you ; act like you didn't see them ,and walk away ,but if they come up to you and start talking to you ,tell them is not a good time .after a while they will get the picture .
there really isn't a nice way . you can try and explain it but it will hurt them no matter how you suger coat it,trust me I've don't it and he is happily married w/a baby on the way ,so something better will come along for him
