Are you supposed to skip a line before you start an essay?

The rule of skipping a line before you start an essay depends on the format you are using. If you are using the block format, then it is mandatory that you skip a line before proceeding to the next paragraph. However, if you are using the first line indentation, you do not need to skip a line.
