If it was just a fist fight, then simple assault (a misdemeanor), if it was more serious with intent to do great bodily harm it might rise to aggravated assault (a felony). If by medical attention, you mean treatment for cuts and bruises (no stitches, splints, or casts for broken bones), then if the attacker has no records, he will not be looking at much jail time if any at all.
If a weapon is used, even a rock, board, or the like, then that elevates the charge. If the beating continued after the victim is defenseless, then it might even rise to attempted murder.
The penalty could be anything from probation up to many years in prison on the higher charges. If the injuries aren't severe or permanent and no weapons were used, I doubt if a long sentence is forthcoming. It comes down to intent and the amount of violence used. There is no way that life in prison is even a possibility. (I am coincidentally, in fact, an attorney in Michigan)
Make sure you take a lot of pictures of all of the injuries so that you can show them to the police and also if you take the person to court then by the time it happens the injuries will have healed so you will have the pictures as proof. You need to go ahead and press charges while at the hospital also. The adult can get in a lot of trouble for that. Just make sure you have pictures. Even if the police or the doctors take pictures it is still bet o have your own copy of the pictures.
I would hope that any adult who lays hands on an underage person (other then a punk, puke threatening thug gangster), would get the book thrown at him and the key to the cage they are gonna put him in is mysteriously flushed.
Possibly assault, domestic violence, possibly child abuse, and if anyone does this to a child, teenager to be more precise, they should face all 3 and maybe even more. There is no need to get physical with anyone like that.
