What makes fireflies light up?

Fireflies glow or light up because of the presence of Luciferin in their bodies. When they take up oxygen, the active cells in their abdomens that contain this substance are activated. The light patterns that are emitted by these insects differ depending on the breed as well as the intended purpose of producing te light. Nitric oxide, goes thought their nervous system and a short glow is formed. Used to attract mates.
