Who says that? That is really wrong. Our grandparents worked far harder than we do. How hard do you think life was before all the Stuff we have now? Plus my mom told me she made $75 a week and busted her arse doing it.
Report as
That $75 a week went way farther then. I remember clearing $79.50 a week. I put a third in savings, gave a third to my mother and had a good time and maintained my car on the other third. That was in the 70's do imagine what it was like for your grandmother with bread a quarter, etc.
In all actuality, allowing for inflation, the average working person is making less now than they did in the 60's. Of course CEOs are making waaay more than they used to.

Didn't say it was, but the bigger the gap gets, the more problems it creates. We now have ill-educated youths because their parents work multiple jobs to put them through schools that seem to have little to no qualified educators, leaving us with children who are no smarter than when they started and are having children of their own because they 'didn't know it would get them pregnant'. Then on top of this they all (well, not all.. 'most') have this 'it's okay welfare will give me all I need' mentality. Then we've got the rich who sit on their pompous thrones, applauding the Government's increasingly poor decisions because it doesn't affect them directly and makes them even more money.

We've always assumed we were rich enough and righteous enough to do anything we wanted to do. The end of cheap oil ended both conceits. We no longer have the wealth to rule the world as our capitalist fathers thought we would. Our greatest moment was WWII, when we brought justice to a jaded and violent world. Our worst was Vietnam, when we lost our sense of justice. We have since sold our wealth and future to the Chinese, who despise us. We are a nation in decline and to answer your question: most Americans don't give a s**t.

Report as
No! Please don't say that. It's true that we ALL sin (even the most perfect person you may know on the face of this earth,) but Christ came to die FOR OUR sins so WE won't be "doomed." We all have been given a free will. We can choose to accept Him as God's Son, our Christ, Lord and Savior and be saved or ignore Him and never accept Him. Then, and only then, are we truly doomed. I think we just need to quit talking so much and take time to listen to Him. He'll show us who to vote for and put into our offices who will do the right things. It won't be easy though. And it can't possibly be fixed (once again) nearly as quickly as we want it because it's been creeping up on us, but we need to stand together united (somehow - haven't figured THAT one out yet) and fight for the right men to be voting FOR US. (I know, got on a soapbox and I'm waiting for the aftershock.) But this is truly what I feel and believe in my heart.

There are so many different things at so many different levels, it's not even funny. It's people not voting or being motivated enough to figure out who they should really vote for. It's people who work the system and are not willing to contribute to society, people who will never work and expect a handout for no reason. It's corrupt politicians, slashing funds to where the money should go, all the while lining their pockets. It's overcrowding of certain city's in America. The list literally goes on and on. And, no one wants to deal with it, they'd rather just point fingers. We have people we have elected into office that are suppose to handle these situations, but they never do.

Okay, I know I'm going to get a lot of heat for this but I think that the women's liberation movement started a domino effect that to this day is still being felt, with no relief in sight. When women decided that pursuing a career was more important than raising their kids that left the kids in the care of others or with no care at all(latchkey kids). What do kids do when left on their own? Get into trouble, experiment with whatever, have sex,.....Results: prisons filled with uneducated thugs, pregnant teens, in general, people who have had no real parental support becoming parents. Then they turn to welfare and repeat the cycle. That's just ONE of the many problems in the U.S. Simplistic? Maybe. But I'm an old fashioned woman who thinks that you shouldn't have kids if you can't or don't want to have a hand in raising them.

Helpful (2) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (15)
Report as
Here is your first bit of heat. Men proved to many of our mothers that they weren't interested in caring for their wives or children anymore my dear. I was raised with no dad for a good deal of our childhood and mom had to work to feed us. I raised one of my kids with a deadbeat dad who was nowhere to be found. I wouldn't necessarily call that liberation. Yes, we can "have it all" but you may notice we tend to have to "do it all" and "be all" too. Staying dependent and "not liberated" in this society is fool hardy for women.
Report as
Men leave women now days because they know there will be a nanny government to take care of them. Government isn't the cure. It's the PROBLEM
Report as
I agree with you Christine. The roles have changed and nobody is taking responsibility anymore. It was much better when husbands were the bread winners and women took care of the home and family. Men didn't leave very often for their families to fend for themselves. Marriages stayed together and worked things out. All this because there was no help from govt like now. People were responsible and children were well behaved. Our nation was number one in education before the dept of Ed. I do believe women demanding independence was not only bad for our country but for women themselves. Life was much easier and more secure in the past. Now women are on their own and fatherhood has been turned over to the state.
Report as
Oh red you've been watching too much I love Lucy. It wasn't better, the "golden 50's" had alcoholism, pedophile priests, deadbeat dads, abusive parents, girls getting pregnant out of wedlock and some of them dying from back alley abortions. It had corruption and crime and spousal abuse. We just didn't get exposed to it all 24/7 through cable and social network and the people that knew about this stuff just turned away and pretended nothing was wrong. Welcome to the 21st century, things aren't perfect but they are getting better.
Report as
My mom and I didn't raise families with the government acting as a "nanny". A whole lot of other women do it the hard way too. You seem to think living on assistance is desirable, easy or preferred. Have you ever been a single parent with only one income to support your family with? Only you to depend on to pay for child care too? I'm not clear on how women's liberation created this issue. I also don't think men give a rat's behind about WHO is going to take care of their children or their children's mother. They just want to make sure they don't have to. One of the reasons I feel it's important to make sure everyone has access to affordable health care.
Report as
I should have said SOME men don't care for their kids. I know lots of great dads. Sorry.
Report as
Really? Do you consider it "better" that not only do we have so many teenage pregnancies but now pregnant teenagers have their own reality shows? And that millions of people actually watch that crap? They also have daycare at many highschools now to accomodate all of the unwed teen moms. And all the negative stuff that was present in the 50s is still here with us today, compounded by all of the new problems. Divorce rates through the roof, hardcore drugs readily availabe to our grade school children, illiterate children being "socially promoted" (don't want to hurt little Johnny's self-esteem!), absentee parents, sub-standard public schools, diminished freedoms and the list goes on and on. Maybe you have a different definition of "better" than I do!
Report as
This comment was in reply to boo153s comment that "things aren't perfect but they are getting better".
Report as
At least divorce can happen now instead of women being stuck with some a- hole.
As for the crap on tv? Look to yourselves, you watch it or it wouldn't be on.
You decry schools passing children, day cares in schools, etc. the common denominator?
Parents ( by the way, raised in the 50s and 60s)
Do your job and quit expecting teachers to do it for you. We had 6 3rd graders that should not have passed due to poor reading skills. Because momma threw a hissy, all 6 passed.
You may not like the news but at least child abuse is now recognized and acted upon. Same with spousal abuse. Drug abuse has always been with us, just because we are connected 24/7 and there are millions more people doesn't mean that we've fallen off the cliff in that area.
Yes things are better now.
Report as
You just said yourself that there are kids being passed into 4th grade that should not have been because of poor reading skills. If you're speaking of the present doesn't that support my stance on illiteracy? When I was in grade school it wasn't uncommon for a kid to be "left behind". My grandma was a school teacher and retired early because the principal at her school was overriding her decision to hold back children that weren't ready for 8th grade due to displeasure from the parents. And yes, I realize that what's on T.V. is a reflection of society, THAT'S MY POINT! By the way, I don't watch any "reality" shows, I prefer old cartoons. As for drug abuse, of course it's always been with us, always will be in one form or another. But when you have a parent at home it's a bit more difficult to go too far astray than when you're left to your own devices. I'm 49 years old, seen a lot of huge changes in society. I'm not saying that there haven't been improvements in some areas. In my opinion, people have become more coarse, more disconnected with other people, more materialistic. Yes, there are women who HAVE to work to support a family. But I know lots of women who went back to work after having children because they are career driven and materialistic. Many women work outside of the home that do not have to. Why have kids? You're right- parents should do their jobs & raise their kids. But they don't. Look at all of the programs that schools offer now. Why? Morals that should be taught at home ,aren't. Food that should be fed at home, isn't. ABCs that should be taught at home, aren't. It goes on and on and now parents expect others to care for their children.
Report as
Are there things that were better in the 50s? Yes but overwhelmingly things are better now when you look at the big picture. No, some parents are not doing their jobs, yes some students are being passed when they shouldn't, etc, etc
BUT
Women have a choice now, I repeat, child and spousal abuse are now recognized and there is help for women now.
I have a career but my daughter learned responsibility, honor and a work ethic and through the years I have helped raise a bunch of other kids the same way.
People have to make their choices and many of them choose stupid tv programs, some of us rarely watch it and I dang sure won't pay for it.
Instead of trying to tie women to the kitchen again, lead by example.
Report as
I certainly am not saying that women should be tied to a kitchen, forced to stay in abusive marriages, have limited career opportunities or in any way be treated badly. What I am saying is that there are many women who have the opportunity to be at home with the children that they chose to give birth to and instead are more interested in the all-mighty dollar. Of course women should have choices. But with choices come responsibilities. By the way- I have a son that I am very proud of. When he was little he would often bring friends home from school who would be at our house for hours with no parental inquiry. I often had to initiate a meeting so that I could know whose children were at my home. Who in the hell lets their 8 year old be at a stranger's house for hours on end? When my son became a bit older and more independent I went to work with no regrets, not having to wonder who was taking care of him or what he was getting into. I think that it is very important for you, as a parent, IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY, to be the one to instill values in your kids and for them to know that they are your top priority, even if it means you can't have the latest electronics or drive a brand new car. I stand by my opinion that kids are better off when a mom (or dad) are there for them at least until they start attending school IF IT'S POSSIBLE.
Report as
NOW you are talking my language. We were saying the same thing from 2 different ends.
I do not believe a child should fell like they are less important than a new car or cool vacation.
It doesn't mean throwing your career away but adapting so your child always feels like they are important you. And that's not just moms but dads too.
I get what you're saying about unsupervised children too. I run a 4-H horse club and I've had to run down parents I never met who would cheerfully dump their 6 yr old with me.
Report as
See- I don't think that it was always like that. People didn't just dump their kids somewhere and figure that others would take care of them. I don't know what the root cause is of this apparent lack of concern for ones children but it's disturbing. And I just think that it's not fair to a child to make a conscious decision to have a child and then take them to daycare so that you can get back to work. If you can't afford to stay home with them then you shouldn't have them. If you can afford to stay home with them then you should. Yes, that includes dad's as well. Roles have changed a lot and the definition of a "normal family" is much more abstract than it used to be. Fathers being more involved in the hands-on raising of their children may be one of the best things to have come from the women's liberation movement.
Report as
I am 57 and was raised by a single parent from age 4 due to my father's death. She was always a working mom, because she had to support us and herself. She was and still is a great mom who always put her kids 1st no matter what. I grew up, went to college, got a job, got married, and had a child of my own. I worked full-time his entire childhood. There were many sacrifices on my part, but my spouse is self-employed, which meant if my family was to have health insurance and a retirement plan, it was up to me. My house was commonly messy, I was always tired, but my child had me 24/7. I always put him 1st in every way: helped every nite w/homework, made home-cooked meals, paid bills, went to work, helped my husband farm. I just had to set my priorities. The things that got skipped were private time for myself, house cleaning/decorating, and I had no hobbies other than my child. I admire you Christine for all you do and insist that you have every right to make the choices you have. I also agree that not all moms sacrifice like my mom did or give up their own personal time or live with a messy house like I did. There are the parents that do not put their kids 1st because they are both working. However, there are others, who put themselves last so the kids miss nothing. P.S. My kid turned out great. Best young adult I know!
