12:00 am cuz 12:00 pm would be the middle of the day.

a.m. and p.m. abbreviations represent the Latin phrases ante/post meridiem, which mean 'before/after midday'. They have been in use in English since the 17th century. Midnight is BEFORE midday, so it must be ante meridian, or a.m.
