Is gay marriage really that big of a deal to you?

It seems to me that there are WAY more pressing issues that we are facing in the U.S., so why, why, why, are people making such a big deal out of this? More and more recently we tend to be concentrating on things that truly don't matter in the big picture

Report as

Gay marriage really is a big deal. This is a matter of allowing people to be in union when they are in love, no matter their sex. Everybody has the right to love whomever they love, and the right to marry whomever they love. That is because we are human, and human beings all have the right to freedom of love. It truly does matter, because this is not some petty cause we are discussing, no, this is an extraordinarily huge cause that needs as much support and attention as possible. People are literally getting beaten to death because they are gay, even things such as allowing gay marriage will help save the lives of those innocent. In 76 countries, it is illegal to be gay. Now just imagine if it was illegal to be yourself, illegal to have brown hair, or illegal to be 5"4, or illegal to have blue eyes. You cannot change that, you cannot change who you are. Gay marriage opens many doors to finally ending the awful things that gay people have to endure from those in society who cannot see the light. I personally think gay marriage is a huge deal, because finally those who are gay can be married and nothing can stand in their way of being themselves and in love.

Indeed. I actually don't care for marriage myself. I don't see the need for a swanky piece of paper that then binds you not in 'holy matrimony' but 'LEGAL matrimony' making everything that much harder when things turn ugly (which is increasing these days). Can we still not be happy in each other's presence? Can we still not be in love and share an everlasting friendship?
I understand what they are fighting for. Us 'straight' people have a right that they do not and they are in constant scrutiny for it. But one cannot control their feelings, one does not choose to feel this way. It just happens. Some know and accept it instantly and other struggle with it, forcing themselves to live their lives the 'right way' in loveless marriages with the first opposite gender person they meet. I truly feel sorry for children growing up in families that shun homosexuality when they, themselves realise they are gay. :(
Report as
But didn't you hear??? Being gay is a CHOICE.......SMH :( So did I choose to be straight???
Report as
The problem here is that in some states if you're not married then certain liberties are not allowed. Like hospital decisions or work benefits like insurance or retirement if the partner dies.

I was always raised to believe marriage is for love but what I came to realise during my mother's second marriage when I was nine is this; Marriage is more of a 'business contract' than a contract of 'everlasting love'. I get you completely, but here, we have de-facto relationship laws giving is privilege to many rights that married couple would have.

I think that gay marriage is very important, and should be allowed in all of the states. People should not try hard to go against it, they should let a law be passed that gay people can get married in all of the U.S. The rich, Christian, white man practically runs this world and we should really go against it!!! Go Obama! :)

Gay marriage is ONLY important to the liberal media and hollywood types. The rest of the country is much more concerned about the economy and foreign policy and unemployment and border security and immigration and higher taxes and graft and corruption in DC. The current spike of the 'gay marriage issue' is only becuase someone (a straight Christian) had the guts to say that he didn't agree with the stance.... a right guaranteed by the US Constitution.
The US was founded on Christian principles. So you have two choices, learn to live under those principles or MOVE to another country.

The U.S. is a free nation, were people can be who ever they want to be, no questions asked. THAT is what the U.S. was founded on. THAT is why thousands of immigrants come here EVERYDAY. And, I promise you, if that ever, EVER changes, I AM moving to Canada! So you right-wing Republicans need to seriously understand that AMERICA IS A FREE NATION!!! And that in america, EVERYONE should be equal, No Matter WHO THEY LOVE.

Gay marriage is a huge issue for me right now and it's pissing me off. There is a chick-fil-a in downtown Chicago. That's the only one around and I love that stuff, but live on the north side. The franchise owner wants to open a second store but is being railroaded by an alderman who is gay because the CEO of the company is against gay marriage. Here's my huge problem. The store owner isn't against gay marriage. The city needs new tax revenue. The chicken tastes delicious. Plus the alderman shouldn't push his beliefs, right or wrong, into business decisions. The Chicago republican party has filed an injunction against the alderman. ALL I KNOW IS I WANT THAT CHICKEN NOW. That's my stance on gay marriage.

Seriously. I'm all for gay marriage. I live in a huge gay neighborhood and have gay friends. Greatest thing for their cause was on the news two weeks ago. While there are places that still don't allow gay marriage the news reported the first gay couple to get divorced. Just thought to myself, hmm. Just one more example of how gay people are no different then straight people.
Report as
That chicken place is the only fast food restaurant that I am aware of that still closes on Sundays to observe a day of rest to spend with your family. Does that day of rest thing sound familiar? Just thought that was interesting. I have no problem with gay marriage. I'm just tired of the debates. Just legalize it already and stfu.

To silver. I don't blame the gay alderman for taking a stance. I support him. I take offense that he is punishing the store owner, the city tax payers, and lovers of delicious chicken. Chicago is a huge gay support city. We support everything here.

Buddah, I LOVED eating at Chik-Fil-a. We were on our way home from the Bahamas and we had a short layover so I went wandering. I saw a Chik-Fil-a and said "OOOOOOOOOO, yummy" so I went and got some. Yes, we have way many pressing issues. But this is how I think it works...instead of fixing what's broken, they just add more crap to the fix it list. Meanwhile, the truly important things get put on the back burner because they don't know how or don't want to deal with them either.

I'm so over this. You are right. We have so many other things that we should be concerned about. I say give people who are homosexual the same legal right to marry as heterosexuals do in the spirit of equal rights for all. Leave the getting married in the church issue up to each individual religious organization.

It doesn't matter to me. While I think gay marriage goes against God's design for marriage, He gives people free will, and the Declaration of Independence also grants everyone the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And if someone's road to happiness is different than mine, that's just too bad for me. Why should I have a say? If actions aren't criminal or violent, it shouldn't be my right or the government's right to trample on that. Not everyone believes in God, and mandated morality based on religious beliefs is how you end up with a Taliban. You are absolutely right. There are way more important things to worry about. The same people crying out against gay rights couldn't care less that the government now has the right to imprison them without due process. (Look up NDAA 2012 if you don't know what I'm talking about.) The economy's in the toilet, we are still at war in multiple places, the president is planning to put spy drones in our skies. Wake up, people.

I think gay marriage is something everyone has an opinion about, and everyone thinks the people who don't agree with them are completely wrong. We just apparently need something to argue about. Personally I'm for gay marriage, but I don't think it's worthwhile to spend all our time arguing about it.

This isn't just about same sex marriage. If we change the definition of marriage then everyone has to be tolerant. The gay community will have to understand and accept that every church cannot be forced to perform their marriage ceremonies. And everyone will have to accept the unions of polygamists...as long as they are consenting adults. There is a bigger picture here to look consider. I'm willing to be "fair" to everyone.

Why wouldn't it? The law can't be rewritten just to please homosexual relationships; these are people that want a "loving union" too.

I'm not saying it's a problem, it needs to be a fair marriage law for everyone. You can't include same sex definition and exclude multiple partners....it'll be the same discriminatory law but with a different group of people.

It does not affect me as I am not gay. Now consider this lets say the government no longer recognizes biracial marriage. Oh, well that's being racist right? Well it also affects a person's ability to claims thier spouse as a dependent on thier taxes and collect benefits from an employer.
Now go back to the biracial couple. Would it be right to deny an Asian man and a Caucasian woman the ability to file a joint tax return?
