How long can opened frosting stay good in the fridge?

I wanted something sweet, but we didn't have any ice cream. So I looked in the fridge and found an opened can of frosting. It has been there for a few months. The can says it will stay good in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. My mom said that it is the kind of food that would grow mold if it went bad. The first few ingredients are sugar, partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil, and water. She said those things don't typically go bad. I've already started eating the frosting, but I just wanted to know about when it would go bad.

In a sealed container, the frosting can stay for 2 weeks and be good. Buttercream frosting is said to be good for up to six months when in a freezer and stored in a sealed container. I doubt your frosting would be good being open or a few months. Read more details at http://www.ehow.com/decision_6854905_long-can-store-homemade-frosting_.html.
