Where should I keep my car's registration and insurance card?

I'd always heard that you need to keep your auto registration and insurance card in your car.

But my local police department sent out a flier encouraging residents to keep these documents on their person instead, because car thieves apparently can easily sell the car if they have your name and address.

If I do keep them on my person, what happens if someone borrows my car and gets pulled over?

Also, should I care if thieves can sell the car easily? After all, in that situation, it's already been stolen from me.

I also wonder if keeping the documents in the car increases my risk of identity theft if the car is stolen.

I have always kept my registration, title and insurance in my car but was told years ago this wasn't a good idea.

Keep the title in a safe place at home. The car cannot be sold without the title. But, your registration and insurance cards need to be with the car. If you are or someone else is driving the car & are pulled over they will need these for the police.

Identity theft is always scary and is always possible. Your Social Security number isn't on the registration.

You might want to invest in a good security alarm for your car if you are in a high risk area.

The registration and the insurance card of your vehicle should be kept with the vehicle. Sometimes I do carry them in my wallet or purse as well. In any case keep them close because if you are pulled over, you will have to present them.

It's not really practical to carry those docs around if you have multiple drivers for a car. But also a worrying thought if you have a garage door opener in your car and a car thief finds your address.

I just went through a checkstop and had my registration and insurance in my purse in the trunk of the car. THe officer reminded me to keep my registration in the glove box in case someone else was driving the car they would have to produce them. So I guess keep it in the glove box for the overzealous police officer who sees everyone as a criminal, including his fellow officers' parents!

The law only requires you to produce the registration and proof of insurance upon demand. If you don't want to make multiple copies to give to any other possible driver then leave copies with the car.

If the car is registered then the police can easily look up the records.
