I really hope this isn't a self-centered question. It's about mentally handicapped people.

What do people want someone to say when they tell that there's a person with down syndrome or Aspergers or something like that in their family? How do they feel about it? How should I feel about it? I've never known anyone who is mentally handicapped so I have no idea.

When someone tells you that, they are just preparing you for the day that you might meet the person with the disability. People with certain mental disabilities ARE aware of what you say to them and they, along with their loved ones, want a comfortable setting for all. Words like "normal", "retarded" and "retard" are not words to be used in their company as they are very offensive. Treat all disabled kids and adults as you would anyone else their age. Hope that helped you out.

You just tell them you're doing a really great job. Try seeing if they'll share their struggles with you so you can understand more:)

You can just ask how they are doing? I work with the intellectually disabled and mostly people are pretty open about it.

Say "I'm sorry to hear that, I'm sure it's a challenge for you, you must be an extraordinary parent"
