Are more and more people getting eloped these days?

I'm engaged and I'm trying to plan. I was wondering about eloping or having a big wedding. Are lots of people getting eloped these days?

I had a big wedding, and wished I would have saved the money. My new sister-in-law was stinkingly, embarrassingly drunk, my own sister announced her engagement 5 minutes before I was to walk up the aisle, and my mother BAWLED through the whole thing. What matters is the marriage... not the wedding.

Getting eloped?? Doesnt make sense. What you mean is... are people eloping these days.
Yes... people are eloping if they find they dont have large sums of money to shell out for a huge church wedding.

Do what you want to do. Who cares what other people are doing.

Jim and I were married by a justice of the peace. My family attended and then went for dinner. My honeymoon was wicked awesome because that's how we wanted to spend our first 2 weeks as husband and wife. A wedding is a day, a marriage is forever.

You might want to consider how family and friends will take it, and how important gifts are to you. Years ago I had a small wedding with 5 days notice--borrowed a dress, had it at my church (no cost) with some cake and punch with a few friends and relatives in the fellowship hall. My son sort of eloped--just had parents and siblings. Though they had a "reception" later for friends and relatives, feelings were hurt. My daughter threw together a big wedding in 2 months. This can work if you're not picky about a "dream wedding". We had it in our church (no cost) with a "cocktail reception" (meat and cheese and fruit trays, soft drinks and we brought our own wine). The trick is not to give enough time for it to snowball into a monstrous event and not to sweat details. Just relax and have a good time with it. Oh, my parents eloped. My mom had no memento of her wedding, except, of course, my dad. She later said she wished she at least had gotten a picture. She remarried after my dad died and had a big wedding.
