In Te Odd Life of Timothy Green, why does Tim have leaves on his legs?

Tim had leaves on his legs because it was a sign of the unusual things that were happening to him. This started when he got a child from the box, which he planted on the ground. I think it's because the Greens "planted" their box of dreams for a child, and Timothy grew out of that spot in their garden.
