Is there a height restriction on being an Olympic Swimmer?

I mean, a 7 foot tall person would technically have less ground to cover due to their reach

Report as

Nope. No height restrictions. Yes a taller person would have a reach advantage but when it comes to turning they also have a lot more body to flip over. In my experience 6'-6'3" is around the size of male swimmers that excel. That's just the ones that I was around.

it's all about arm and leg length.

Yes but they would also seem to move a little slower than others because of the time it takes for each stroke and since they're more likely to weigh more, would be under the optimum height for above the water for the fastest speed.

Ooo. I forgot about the speed of the arms moving. Good point.
Report as
Nice in theory, but Phelps is 6'4".. Speed isn't an issue.. And he has a really long torso and long arms.. Ryan Lockte is 6'2"....

Nope.. Like NB says, 6' to 6'2" ish is about the right height.. Power, length and turn speed/ratio seem to be best in swimmers of this height... How tall are you, Naf... Next Olympic trials??

AWWWWwwwwww!! That's the second nicest thing another man has ever said to me :)

NAF. Shaq had a show called shaq vs. He challenged other athletes in their sports. He tried swimming against phelps. I thought he was going to drown. The only time he ever won an event was against Charles Barkley in golf.
Report as
omg.. should i be scared? thankful? or hot? lol.. all take that as a good thing.. right? whatcha think girl? :).. thanks Naft.. hats off n stuff
Report as
I saw that show :) It was more for the humor factor than anything else. Shaq is an awesome dude :)

I forgot about Spud Webb til I saw that one pic in there :)
Report as
Omg.. I'd forgotten how tall he was.. Dang... Lmao...
Report as
Didn't spud Webb win the dunk contest one year.
Report as
Sometime in the '80's.. Was a big deal, since he's only 5'6"/5'7" ish.. Of course it was judged that way...
Report as
Well slip. They didn't have to jump over cars or other objects back then. The fact that a guy under 6' could dunk was cool. The fact that he could do a 360 dunk was awesome. I don't watch the dunk contests anymore. Boring. They were cool to watch back when the guys did something.
Report as
Just curious. How did swimming turn into a dunk talk. Did we just find the only way to win next years dunk contest.

You said stroke... Mmmm.. Phelps is 6'4" Kel... Purty tall...
Report as
ikr... and so i did.. getting wet is a big part of the outcome.. the longer the stroke.. the.. well..
Report as
I could see in fly how the longer arms would help. Plus no flipping in a turn. The thing I was noticing was how everybody uses a dolphin kick underwater now even on freestyle.
Report as
ya was wondering.. how bout breast (and baby.. no inference.. however YOU WILL GO THERE).. or back?.. longer strokes stuff in general.. not sure here NB?
Report as
Omg.. You said breast.. Yeah, forget fly and breast, I'd be more buoyant in the backstroke.. It's, ummm.. Not my job to worry about, ahem.. Ummm.. Breast stroking.. Oops, I mean the breaststroke..
Report as
In backstroke I would think longer arms would suck. My job was to always come in fifth or better so what do I know. Only swam it in high school and the other two guys were state qualifiers every year. Both shorter than my six foot frame.
Report as
didnt i just win that gig? geesh that was a hard competition.. thank goodness i came.. out.. on top
Report as
thats righ.forgot NB.. points are points.. we will bring pompoms if you eva make anudder run
