Kitten, I'm having the same message appear when I try and update my apps! This was about 10-15 minutes ago. I've went into settings and reset the network settings to factory default. This didn't work. I'm glad you asked because I thought it was just my iPhone. Maybe they are having network problems? Good luck.
When it says you can't connect to iTunes store on your iPhone, it may mean that you don't have Wi-Fi connection. If you don't have Wi-Fi connection or internet connection, it is possible for that to happen.
