Fuse blows when turning on air conditioner-central air- can this be a problem with the thermostat?

You may need to replace the on/off switch in your fuse box. it's easy, just turn off the main power and loosen the screws that hold the problem switch , it pops out like a Lego brick. Take the switch with you to home depot and get a replacement with same code. Pop it back in, reattaching the 2 wires.

Sounds like a short dont sound like thermostat maybe compressor froze up too

It can be an electrical problem. If nit addressed it could start a fire.

Doubtful -- something is shorted out .

It's not the thermostat , It is a problem with the compressor , It is either siezed up or it needs a new capacitor , The most common problem why compressors hum but don't start is a bad capacitor
