The story is about the life of an eight year old boy known as Victor, whose father dies during an employee's strike. Victor learnt of his dad's sudden death through a newspaper. His mother remarries and leaves him with is older brother who teaches him how to vend newspapers. He gets beaten up in the streets, learns how to curse and smoke.
