Can being an extra on television shows lead to bigger roles at all?

I found a job that enables me to be an extra in multiple shows and whenever I want to work, I can just call and come in. I have an aspiration to be an actress, and I want to know if that will get my foot in the door or just help me in the long run..

Being an extra is a great way to get into the film industry. You get hands on experience being on set, learn to relax on camera, and if you're lucky you could get picked to be a featured extra with more pay and a possible credit. Just don't think this is your way to make it. Chances are you wont get noticed, ever! Learn what you can and continue to work hard at your dream. Goodluck and don't ever give up!

It can help you in the long run, without a doubt. When producers hire actors/actresses they look at their performance records and history. If your "extra" character is funny, you could also be discovered.

I didn't vote your thumbsdown, MrFudge, but what you do describe is how things used to work in days of yore. They don't work like that anymore. The only way to get noticed for bigger parts is to audition for small parts that are not "extras".

So what you're saying is that I'd basically be wasting my time?

You wouldn't believe the great actors and actress who started out in bit parts. If you hang in there and you really like it you'll go far!

Those actors/actresses are rather old today. Nobody recently has done that.

Do you know how many people have a jobs as extras? A LOT! Unless you have a speaking part then your chances of becoming "discovered" are very slim! I blame disney for making kids believe that nobodies can become famous by doing nothing! Truth is you have to audition like everyone else, and work for your roles just like everyone else every-time you audition. sorry! but it may look good on an acting resum?, if you audition for a commercial!

Yes, after being an extra. When you get a speaking role that means your on "Permit", which also means more $$. Good luck :-D
