If you are not in a relationship, why do people assume that you are unhappy?

I've never been married, am not gay, and have lived alone for most of my adult life. I'm not ecstatic, but I'm not unhappy either. Why do people think that I need a girlfriend, or wife? Even my shrink suggested that I get a girlfriend a few years ago. I took his advice, and I was miserable. I admit that my choice in girlfriends may have been poor , but still, now that we are no longer dating I find that I am much happier. People are always trying to set me up with their friends. Do they really think that I am desperate enough to go out with just about anybody?

I think after a while people get used to how they are living it becomes normal for them. Just like people who live alone. Then when someone tries to move in with them it becomes nearly impossible to break the habbit that has been started and the person is miserable living with someone else. You don't want to be one of those older people that end up dying alone. I wouldn't give into just dating people for the sake of dating someone. That is pointless and of course you are going to be miserable. You sound like you just need to meet the right person. If you do meet someone you want to be with one day don't shut them out of your life because being single is easier. Of course being single is easier. You only have to answer to yourself. At the same time though, you are missing out on a lot of great stuff in life.

They assume you are lonely and depressed, it is common in people who live alone

Clinical depression cannot always be solved by another person. Loneliness neither.

That is true. I guess assumptions are hard to deal with in reality. (green)

Some people just project their own needs and desires onto others. Perhaps they are not happy being single, so naturally assume that no one else can be either. It's a positive thing to be content in yourself, and it may even be helpful when and if you decide to be in a relationship. Like the saying goes, you can't make someone else happy if your not.

I think most people don't feel "whole" unless they have a partner and they assume it's the same for people like us. They confuse being alone with being lonely. I LOVE being alone and am not the least bit lonely. I enjoy being able to do what I want, when I want, without having to take anybody else into consideration. Your friends and family (and therapist) may not believe you're truly happy because it's unimaginable to them that a person can be happy if he or she is alone. Just keep telling them no and they'll eventually back off.

There is a whole world full of stupid people out there. It's a shame that we can't just take all of the good, smart, kind people on here, and other sites, and then blast off to Mars or somewhere.

Very true I hate stupid ppl

I don't "hate" anyone. In fact I pity them more than anything, because they are just so clueless as to how stupid they really are. Ah well! All that we can do is our best to try and educate them eh?...:P
