minimum wage isn't meant to be a support system for a family, it is the beginning wage for no skilled jobs such as high school kids would make. i disagree with raising minimum wage because it raises the cost of everything else and effectively lowers my wages.
Benjamin Franklin said "the day that the public realizes they can vote themselves money, the Republic is dead." Why stop there? The minimum wage should be raised to $1000 per hour. By doing this, you will get 1-3 people employed, and you can put everyone else on food stamps and unemployment. The end result of increasing minimum wage is to unemploy thousands if not millions of primarily teenage workers, as well as shutting down small business who employ them. That you would make such a suggestion at a time of grave national unemployment shows you know nothing about how business works. I owned two restaurants, and I can tell you from personal experience it's painfully difficult to make a profit in America today.
I think the minimum wage should be raised. If you work, you should earn a living wage. Obviously, if you take the time (and spend the money) to get a higher education, you deserve more, but we will always need workers to do the jobs that many of us don't want to do. What, those people should live in poverty because they do a valued service for the rest of us? $10. per hour is not going to kill business owners or devalue skilled workers. But it will make a world of difference to some people who work hard for their families.
The people who think min. wage should not be raised are the same people who whine that the working poor pay no income tax. I say give them enough money to live on and you'll get your tax. Can't have it both ways. I should add that working teens tend to work short hours, so that's a moot argument.
It does no good to raise the min. wage 'cause doing so just makes everything else go up too. When the min. wage was 1.00 per hour, it cost $0.35 to go to the movies and gas was $0.48 per gal. Now what are you paying? Every time a worker gets a "cost of living increase" the cost of living increases. It is an endless cycle. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. IF THE MIN. WAGE GOES UP, SO DOES THE COST OF EVERYTHING ELSE!!! It's just that simple and a stupid thing to do.
