In 8 person Olympic rowing what is with the 9th person in the boat.

Is there something more going on than just yelling row? I get if you're behind you can see how much but why does the 8 person team have one and not any other rowing team.

The 9th person on an 8 person Olympic rowing is to provide directions to them. His job is to make sure that the team does not go off course or bump in to the others. He is also to make sure that the team does not slow down but maintain or keep up the speeds.

Ok. Why don't they have them in 4 or 2 person rowing.

Do they try to pick a 9th man as small as possible to cut down on the weight they have to carry like they do with jockeys in horse racing?
