I am babysitting and wanting to know if I am getting paid enough or too much for this situation. READ DESCRIPTION!~

I am starting at 8pm and the mother will return sometime early in the morning. I am babysitting two kids (8 & 5) and I am getting paid $50. It is the first time getting paid money to babysit kids not related to me. (I have two brothers, two sisters I watch alot, and I went to a day-long class for babysitting and everything and graduated and I have the certificate to show. If you think the payment is too low or too high please comment what you think the payment should be. THANK YOU!~

The children are more then likely sleeping, and I would imagine you too, the majority of the time? 50 is a good amount, not changing diapers, feeding babies or doing housework? 50 sounds good to me :)

Sleeping or not sleeping .. Our OP is still 'on the clock' so to speak even for the night shift. She is not on her own time to do as she pleases. She is employed to stay and watch out for the children .. and should be paid to do so.

So true biker. Just because they are asleep has no bearing on the cost.

Exactly .. if you are being paid to take the responsibility .. you get paid for the WHOLE time .. not just while you are awake. You are still on duty.

That I suppose could be true, but there is also the fact that a lot of people with children, in this economy, and no fault of their own, only make minimum wage. I guess everyone has to decide for themselves what they will accept as a wage.
Report as
That is a decision that has to be made by the parents .. They can negotiate the acceptable fee with their potential baby sitter.

We are not talking about parents to scrape by to make ends meet .. Their having to work should not be at the expense of a potential baby sitter. We are talking about fair value in trade for taking over the responsibilities of caring for someone else's children.

Should there be a difference in rate for a babysitter who is working for a having to work the night shift working parent .. or a partying, staying up all night parent. Should there be a difference?

I think 50 or 55 is great.

You should be paid at what ever the minimum wage is for your area per hour. So if minimum wages is $7.00 you multiply THAT by the number of hours those children are in your care.

A lot of people in today's economy only make minimum wage themselves unfortunately.

I do want more but I don't know how to tell! And she will probably ask often so I don't want to make it too high cuz she might find someone more cheapr! But $70 does sound nice!

Yeah.. Cause you there for at least 10 hours but you could sleep threw a lot so 70 seems fair to me:)

And ask her if she thinks 70 is a reasonable amount!
Report as
Well if she keeps asking maybe time after time she might raise the payment higher or I could mention making it higher!

The first child should be 15 per hour and 10 for each additional child. That's 25 dollars a hour for two children. I don't think that's too much to pay for someone responsible for caring for children. I would specify no friends over. Your not there to visit with your friends on the phone or in person. You charge a fair price but your there to work.

Exactly I think that if I am going to get paid for something I am going to do it the best I can. And I have seen shows and stuff were the are babysitting and invite friends over or talk on the phone and I thought it was crazy!
Report as
I agree. You can use it as a selling point. Plus you trained. Another selling point.
