Equal pay for equal work

I work as part of a team with 10 of us in 5 states. I have been at this position the longest and am paid less than most that have started much later. A person in my same city recently took another position and they are not backfilling it so I am expected to take it on. Is this fair?

Fair? If I'm an employer I pay people based on the level of effectiveness the person brings to their job. So if I have a one year employee that works really hard and does a great job and I have another employee that has been with me for years but just gets by doing what they have to do, I'm paying the one year employee more. I don't give raises just because someone is there.

And yes, that is one of the longest, most badly constructed sentences I've ever written.

If you are willing to accept what you are being paid and still do the job, it is absolutely fair. If you are willing to do the work for what they are paying you and they are willing to give you your paying for doing this work, then it seems like a fair exchange where both parties are willing to accept the terms.
