Gatorblu's answer is my favorite! I can only add that the spirit of Santa was very exciting for the children when they were very young and we parents were able to teach our children to share in the generosity.

Santa was a real person a really long time ago, he gave money to a family who couldnt get anyone to marry their daugters and they were about to be sold into prostitution. He continued doing so to different families with different needs. He later became a saint (St.Nicholas). So parents today continue the tradition of giving to there children every Christmas
