The easiest thing to do is to check out the charity and see how legitimate or effective the charity is.

If you are in the US, go to www.charitynavigator.org.

Charity Navigator is the watchdog organization for EVERY non-profit in the US ( and possibly Canada but I have not checked )

They tell you exactly where the money goes, how much actually goes where they say, how much is wasted on overhead and salaries, etc.

Then with the information you can make your own decision.

You will have to carry out feasibility study so as to see whether it is even possible to engage your customers in such an activity in the first place. It is also important that you carry out a cost benefit analysis and see whether the activity will achieve desired results in the long or short term. Also, you should look at other similar marketing strategies implemented by others in your area of operation and the results attained.
