Is this sentence need "IS"?

"I knew someone (IS) called David."

A teacher told me it needs "IS" Is that right?

The statement "is this statement need is" is incorrect because is doesn't need to be there. Say the statement without the "is" and see if it sounds right and proper

Well yeah but change knew to know then that would be a complete and correct thought

Still not so. You would have to make it "I know someone whose name is David." Agreement in tense.

Well, no. The teacher was wrong. It would have to be "was" instead of "is".

Actually your question should read: Does this sentence need "IS"?
(Without the first is?)
