Could a student on a visa obtain residency in the US after a confidential marriage in California?

A confidential marriage is just like any other marriage recognized in law, so you can get resident status. The only difference is that the marriage won't be on public records. You will still have to follow the process followed when married spouses want to get resident status or citizenships, and the requirements don't change just because it was a confidential marriage.
