Can an employer make you work time he doesnt pay you for?

I am working for a company that makes you start 15 minutes before your shift to set up for the day but doesnt pay me for the time.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to make you work without paying you, but if it's not it should be! Setting up is a job, and that requires payment.

If thats what you agreed to than yes. But if you never agreed to it than you can talk to the emplyer about it but if other people would do it than he could fire you and hire someone else. But he should have told you at the start of a job.

I am not sure, I have worked for places such as this in the past and am fortunate that I now work for a company that takes care of me. With today's economy I find myself fortunate to have a job and would put up with 15 minutes of going in early.

Depends on the job. But if they say you HAVE to be there 15 min early all the time, you should be paid for it.

You shouldn't put up with that. Just quit that stupid job. Theres dozens of people who would gladly put up with it just to have a job.

I think that's illegal. Because if you get hurt in those 15 minutes who will be responsible? You should ask them if they will be responsible if you are injured in that 15 minutes.

You can call or visit any Wage and Hour Office to ask about the laws.It doesn't matter what time your shift was suppose to end.Employers and employees can be in breach of an employment contract.

Depends on how you get paid. Like if you work hourly, your supposed to be compensated. But if you work salary/contract than your hours may not be set. You should check with your HR rep about it
