What is the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian?

I have seen these terms used for people who don't eat meat. Are these terms used interchangeably, or is there a difference? Please help.

Hi Mavericker, Vegetarians usually will eat Dairy foods, Honey, and often eat even eggs and fish. Vegans usually do not eat *anything* that comes from or is made by an animal, so no cheese, milk, yogurt, eggs, etc and often no honey either since this is made by bees.

Look whether you like it or not, I am a vegetarian and I don't eat any meat, fish, eggs and anything that has got gelatin and dextrose. Now Vegan is someone who can eat meat but won't eat cooked meals (I think that is true but I am positive about Vegetarins) PS: I am 13 and I live in Australia

Veganism is often considered a stricker version of vegetarianism. Vegetarians avoid products where you have to kill the animal to get it (i.e. leather, meat, etc.) While vegans avoid all animal products. (i.e. everything regular vegetarians avoid, plus things like eggs, milk, and honey.)

A vegetarian is anyone who doesn't eat meat.

A vegan is someone who believes in animal rights (that animals don't exist for people to use), and doesn't eat meat, dairy, and eggs, doesn't wear leather, fur, and wool, and generally doesn't go to circuses and rodeos.

Vegans are a subset of vegetarians.

How can vegetarians and vegans live without meat and dairy? I love meat and dairy! I love veggies too, but I can't survive on that alone.

Absolutely, and you weren't meant to. Whenever a hardcore vegetarian or even the mildest of vegans complains to me about eating meat, I just point to the sharp pointy teeth in the front of my mouth that are genetically designed for tearing flesh.

Then, if they persist, I can make other arguments about the fact that vegetable protein sources (like beans, or even eggs for that matter) do not provide the body with everything it needs, that it usually gets from meat.

I know right? We were meant to eat meat. It's the cycle of life.

A vegetarian consumes foods without meat, such as beans, eggs, milk, etc.A vegetarian can eat proteins and dairy, but no meat. A vegan only consumes food that doesn't contain dairy, meat, etc. Vegans only eat plant foods.

Something no one here seems to have grasped (I guess I now see that MrAstley came close) is that while being a vegetarian is all about food, but being a TRUE vegan goes far beyond food. A true vegan will not even use any type of product that contains animal byproducts, or has undergone any form of animal testing. (Both of those categories include a lot of Make-up products, and personal hygiene products, for example)... I wonder how a vegan feels about taking the prescription drugs that their doctor gives them...? And I hope none of them actually have a Dog or a Cat, since feeding a Dog or a Cat a vegetable diet is certainly not good for them.

Vegetarians eat anything but meat really. I should know because I am vegetarian. Vegan means that you don't eat meat or even anything that comes from animals.
