You can get a divorce without getting a lawyer if you have limited or no assets and you have no children or dependents. If there are children involved and assets, you will be required to get an attorney when they fail to sign the papers. I do not think so. In order for a divorce to be valid both parties need to sign the necessary paper work in order to proceed.

In some states the other party doesn't have to sign you just have to wait a certain amount of time.
