What do you think is the cause of all this "supposed" ADD that is affecting people these days?

I mean, there has to be a root cause. Either that or there has always been ADD and people were just better at controlling themselves

Report as

There was cases of it in the past. My uncle for example grew up in the 60's and was "hyperactive" he couldn't sit still to save his life, and if you could get him to sit still he wouldn't shut up. No matter how much he got "whooped" he couldn't control himself. Back then, my gram says, there wasn't a name for everything...some kids were just more "hyper" than others.
I will agree that ADD/ADHD does get over diagnosed alot anymore, but you could say the same for bi polar/manic depressive syndrome.
It seems, to me, most people want an easy quick fix. They don't want to actually put in the time and hard work it takes to raise a GOOD kid.
I have a daily struggle with my son. When he was 3 he was diagnosed with Apraxia. There is no quick fix for that. He is also severely ADHD and mildly (high functioning) autistic. There simply is no quick fix, it's a daily struggle at home and school. If I don't medicate him at all...oh holy heavens he's a terror...despite my constant vigilance with him.

I completely agree with your answer. Your answer is obviously more valid since your child has ADD, and you deal with his condition on a daily basis.
Report as
Hence why I'm always tired. It also provides extra strain on my marriage. We've learned to cope and deal for the most part.
It's also why I'm a hands on volunteer at his school.

My niece has ADHD, my sister chooses to act as if she doesn't. It's ridiculous, that's not something you want to ignore. I see the problem just getting worse.
Report as
Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about...one of my sister in laws refused to acknowledge there was something wrong with her son. Turns out he suffers from aspberger syndrome and should have gotten help 2 years before she would FINALLY take him to a specialist. She's the type who has a "perfect" life and puts on airs so people will believe so.
Sad really, pretending to be something you're not.
Report as
Mr_FadedGlory
I know it's hard to admit or even sometimes see the flaws in our own kids, but when the problem is ongoing and people keep telling you non stop that there's something wrong, there's a point where u just take ur kid in, even if it's to show the other people they're wrong. That's what I told my sister, take in your daughter and if your right, show everyone,"hey look, you were wrong, my daughter is fine"
Report as
THAT'S exactly why she finally took him in to a specialist. She was intent on proving me (and her brother) wrong. Turns out we knew what we were talking about...imagine that.
The other sister listened when we told her she needed to take one of her daughters in because her speech wasn't developing, she knows the hard road we've traveled with Daniel so she actually listened. Turned out she has a speech disorder similar to apraxia if not that itself. That's what Daniel had...it's a speech AND communication disorder. They're two different things, but apraxia is one of the few that is both.
He's almost 10 now and the speech therapist at his school couldn't believe it when she got his records, WE worked THAT hard.
Some parents are just lazy or too self involved. I went 6 years not knowing "me" time...I only get it now because Naomi is 13 and Daniel goes to his dad's every weekend.
There are times where I have to keep myself from slapping some "parents".

I think there are legitimate learning disabilities, but for the most part it is a combination of: overstimulation, too little quiet time and not enough discipline.

I know the cause. A long time ago, when there were monkeys, the evil monkey told the other monkeys not to touch the rock. One monkey touched the rock. So that's how it all started.

I think its lack of using that part of the mind, our minds arent as active as they are usually, I think diseases are branching off, and making many new ones, sometimes people might have a little problem, doctors say they have it, they just take medicine, I believe the brain is powerful enough too get rid of it, I think we think about things too much, maybe everyone has it, but they dont have so much free time, too convince themselves they have it, our minds need too be active, we need too do something every minute, kids played with jumping jacks a while ago, truthfully, I couldnt do that for 2 hours.

I'm sorry, NAF... could you repeat that? I wasn't paying attention.

Seriously, Mona is right. When we were younger, we were taught to sit still, speak when spoken to, pay attention and respect our elders. Now every parent who is too lazy to instill manners and good behavior in their child has the easy out of saying, "Little darling has ADD/ADHD". I know that there are legitimate cases of it, but I also think that it is way overdiagnosed, and because of that we are raising a whole generation of kids who think that the best solution to problems is found in a pill bottle.

There was a couple on some show a while back, I don't know which one (obviously I wasn't paying attention, lol) and the wife's complaint was that the husband would text her from the other end of the sofa to ask if she wanted to watch a movie. If he were my husband, he'd have to learn to type with his colon if he ever wanted to text me again, 'cuz you KNOW where that phone's going!

I remember when I was a kid we had recess in school, actually did sports for PE in HS. Played outside till it got dark. My parents forced me to play outside. Now my children watch a movie at least once a week in school, if not more. Don't play outside in school when it's hot ( yet will have after school sports) parents are fine with their children watching TV or playing video games. Parents stick up for their child if they get in trouble at school.Fail to believe their child is not perfect, do their homework for them. So many factors that just need to be changed and poof ADD will be gone!! Now they are saying this kids who watch TV so much and don't have social interaction have Autism, it blows my mind! Why can't Dr's just say, There is nothing wrong with your child they need discipline, and to play outside.
Report as
Autism is WAY overdiagnosed. It's like the parents WANT something to be wrong with their kid.
Report as
Everyone needs an excuse or something to blame.

root cause?? ppl not dealing with their baggage from the past. thats the bottom line for ANY mental illness....ppl want to hide behind a diagnosis instead of doing the hard work on their own mental state of mind

There has to be a root cause, but doctors have not narrowed down what that is yet. I totally disagree with most of your answers, I don't believe hitting a child who may or may not have it, is the answer. I think that's horrible.

Okay. I'm always afraid of people thinking I hit my son just because I have a stern manner with him.

"ADD" has always been around, it just had a different names, such as: "BRAT." It's easy to stick a psychiatric label on a kid's bratty behavior, giving those kids (& their parents) a convenient explanation/excuse for their actions.
The cause(s)..? My opinion: TOO much TV as a "babysitter," too much internet time, video games, cell phones, etc., as well as NOT enough time getting exercise, outdoor activities, reading & discipline. Plus, the pharmaceutical companies profit greatly from any "new disorders" and make tons of $$ with ADD meds.
I DO believe there are genuine ADD cases, but also believe (as FarmerGirlMaryJo said), it is OVERdiagnosed -- severely overdiagnosed!

(There's a great South Park episode about this where all the kids are being put on Ritalin, then to get off it, they were put on "Rital-OUT," ha!)

I think the rise in ADHD, autism, asthma and auto-immune disorders is a combination of GMOs, microwave usage, formaldehyde and propylene glycol in everything from shampoo to pills, corn syrup and soy lecithin in most of our food, and vaccines with unnecessary, and sometimes dangerous, junk. These disorders have been spiking since the 80's when these elements became widespread. But, there's no way to pinpoint cause individually because triggers likely differ from person to person. Some people, for instance, are sensitive to metal toxicity, and they can exhibit autistic-type tendencies just from Thimerosal vaccines. This happened to my college roommate's son, who recovered after chelating heavy metals from his system. Some kids aren't so lucky, and the damage is irreparable.

I think you have the best answer. You actually addressed the question.
Report as
Thanks, FG. So many of the studies try to focus on one thing being the cause of today's health issues and results come up inconclusive, but it's probably a combination of things, especially multiple toxins. Too many toxins are everywhere for it not to affect people negatively.

Mr_FadedGlory
Thank you again for such an insightful answer. Almost everyone else who answered are ready to blame it on "too much of this" and "not enough that". It's a real disease/condition whether people want to admit it or not.
Report as
They no longer put thermosil in vaccinations. All theories of a link between vaccinations and autism have been disproven or found invalid due to not following guidelines of a study. The doctor who started this theory has lost his license and is no longer allowed to practice medicine or even allowed to do any studies of any kind.

There is no thermosial in vaccines, there hasn't been in years!! I have spoken to many doctors AND read the pamphlet that is in the box of the vaccines. No thermosial. Stopped putting it in in the 70's. Jenny McCarthy spread so many lies about autism it pi$$es me off. Yet her child was " cured" from an in-curable condition. I have an Autistic child I have done lots of research and spoke to many Doctors, neurologists, and Pharmacists, as well as many therapists. Right now the only thing they truly know what causes autism is a genetic factor somewhere in the family gene pool, for most not all, children dx with autism
