Spanish is my mother tongue, and I started teaching myself English when I was 17, using an English course I bought and which came with cassettes, lessons and grammar books, and a dictionary. By the time I turned 23, I was able to make myself understood in English, practicing for an hour every day. I speak fluent French and German, too, and I also learned these languages in the same way I had learned English. I even wrote short stories in English; one of them got published. I also learned English reading history books, and by reading history books I became Republican and I am going to vote for Mitt Romney, because I think he is smart. Reading aloud is very important to perfect your pronunciation and fluency, but make sure it's the right pronunciation by learning the phonetic symbols in the dictionary.

I learned German from actually living in Germany, but I'm losing it quite a bit since I never practice it anymore. I took Spanish 2 semesters ago (they didn't have German class) and I already forgotten most of it.

I've taken spanish for 7 years and haven't learned anything (it's a class you HAVE to take) but one of my friends just moved about a year ago and had taken Rossetta stone for only one year, and was able to go to advanced spanish, she highly recommended it

I can't believe no one has mentioned this; the Rosetta Stone program. I quit using it because I was a snotty little 7 year old and didn't want to do anything. But I still remember quite a few words in spanish from 7 years ago.

Although expensive, Rosetta Stone is great and you can have a working knowledge of the language in a few months if you apply yourself.

and i really wanna know the most effective and fastest approach to learn a second language as well. but things alway get worse if you won't follow the typical percedure, like remembering words, learning grammar, and talking with somebody. and the most helpful tips is speaking to a native.
