When a cat purrs, it shows contentment, whether being petted or not. They may also nip at you but to them, this is also more or less a 'love-bite'. They will show the first signs of displeasure by putting their ears back. Hope this helps

i think its cause they like being petted im not sure ive always been a dog person

Because they like it. If they didn't like it they would hiss and scratch.
